God Heard The Boy Where He Was

This message is for to be heard exactly where you were, rather than where somebody thinks you should have been

You are reading it because it is Thursday and the group is doing Genesis, and Genesis is the safe one.

You are two chapters ahead so that it looks like you have kept up. There is a mug beside you and a highlighter you will not use, because you never actually highlight anything, and the house is quiet in the way it goes quiet after nine.

It is the desert chapter. The water runs out. She puts the boy under a bush because she cannot watch it happen, and she goes and sits a good way off, and she lifts up her voice and she weeps.

You have read this before. You know how it ends. There is a well.

And then you get to the next verse, and it does not say what you have always assumed it says.

God heard the voice of the boy.

Not hers. His. And she is the one crying in the sentence just before it.

Then three more words, and the three words are the ones that stop you.

Where he is.

You put the mug down.

Because you were seven, and you called, and nobody came, and you have been fine about it for a very long time. You can talk about it in a level voice at a table if it comes up. You have done the work. You have said the forgiving out loud in rooms with other people watching, and you meant it.

And nobody, in all those years, has ever once said the three words that are sitting on the page in front of you tonight.

Not that it was heard eventually. Not that it was heard once you got somewhere better. Not that it counted when you finally learned to say it properly, in the right language, to the right person, with the right amount of composure in your face.

Where he is.

You sit at that table for a while with the highlighter you never use, and you do not turn the page.

Three words the sentence did not have to include

Put the highlighter down.

You do not have to tell me anything tonight, and you do not have to tell the Thursday group either, and nothing on this page is going to ask you what happened. I am not asking. If anybody has ever made the hearing conditional on the telling, they were wrong about that, and they were wrong about it in a way that cost you years.

Start with what the verse withholds, because what it leaves out is the whole gift. Genesis 21:17 does not say God heard him because somebody prayed properly, or because the words came out right, or because an adult in the house had finally noticed. You are looking at a sentence about a location, and the Holy Spirit put that sentence in a book that has been read out loud for three thousand years so that a woman at a kitchen table could find it on a Thursday she thought was safe.

And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.Genesis 21:17

Now read the verse just before it again. She is the one weeping. She has gone and sat a distance off and lifted up her voice, and the text is entirely clear about whose crying it is describing.

And then the next line says God heard the voice of the boy.

The account never records the boy saying a word. Not one. Whatever came out of him under that bush is not written down, it is not quoted, nobody preserved it, and it went up anyway and it was received as a voice.

Which means the thing done in that house when you were small was not too quiet to register anywhere. You were heard at a volume nobody wrote down, and Scripture is deliberate about that detail, and the Spirit of God has never run a system where a child has to be audible to the adults in the room in order to be audible in heaven.

And then the three words. Where he is.

Sit with the shape of that, because it is doing something exact. It rules out the right place. It rules out the right time. It rules out the composure, the vocabulary, the correct posture, and the presence of anybody qualified to help. Where he is is a phrase about geography and nothing else at all, and geography is the one thing a child in trouble has no say over.

Now let me say what this page will not do, because you have almost certainly been handed it before. Nothing here is going to explain why nobody came. The verse offers no reason and I am not going to invent one. Several have been offered to you over the years by people who badly wanted the silence to make sense, and not one of those explanations was ever the thing you needed. What the word gives you is a fact about the hearing rather than a justification of the absence, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to sign anything about anybody in order to receive it.

One plain thing, because it belongs out in the open. If reading this has pulled something up, and it has gone anywhere near not wanting to be here, then tell one living person tonight, and you do not have to tell them any of the history to do it. Your doctor, a friend, whoever picks up. In the United States, 988 answers by call and by text, and texting is fine if talking is too much tonight. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line. That is not a failure of faith, and the person on the other end is not receiving a burden. Somebody comes when you call that number, and that is rather the point: God has always put real rescue into human hands, and reaching for one of them is obedience, not defeat.

The breakthrough

So read it again tonight with your own place in it.

Not the tidied place. Not the version that can be said in a level voice at a table. The actual one, at the actual age, in the actual house, and not one detail of it has to be spoken out loud to anybody living for this to stand. You were heard there, and Genesis 21:17 is where that is written down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a very old hearing into the present tense.

Nothing about tonight settles the rest of it. No timetable is being handed to you and nobody here is telling you how long any of the rest takes. This one thing gets put in its place, and everything else can stay exactly where it is until it is ready to move.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your hand on the page. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not a woman arguing with her own childhood; it is an ambassador reading out a fact the King entered in the record long before she got here, and it belongs to you because Scripture puts it there. What He does with the rest of it, and how slowly, and through which safe person, is His to decide, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a very old hearing from being past tense.

  1. Silence in that house, you are not the record of whether I was heard. Genesis 21:17 says God heard the voice of the boy where he is, and the Holy Spirit is the witness that the hearing happened whether or not anybody in that room ever confirmed it.
  2. Verdict I reached at seven, get off me. I am one of the ones He comes for, and I say that in the name of Jesus, because the hearing in that verse was aimed at the exact place the sound came from.
  3. God, You heard it at the time and You were never once waiting for me to say it better. Your word puts the hearing at the place the child actually was, and Your Spirit has carried that fact the whole way here, so I am reading it out loud tonight with where I was in the place of where he is.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
