I Told Them It Was Over

You stood up in that room in March and you told them it was over.

You had thought about it for a fortnight before you did it. You did not want a scene and you did not want anybody making a fuss, so you kept it short, and you looked at the back wall for most of it, and when you got to the end there was that half second of silence where nobody knew whether to clap.

Then they did. And an older man came up afterwards and took your hand in both of his and did not say anything at all, which was somehow the worst and the best of it. A woman cried. Somebody you barely knew stopped you by the door and said you have no idea what that just did for me, and then told you something about her son.

You drove home that night about two feet off the ground.

It is four months later now. It came back on a Thursday, quietly, the way it always does, and it has been back for a while, and you have been managing it the way you managed it before anybody knew.

And here is the part that has you sitting in the dark tonight. It is not the thing itself. You know what the thing is, you know its shape, you have beaten it once and you are not frightened of it in the way you used to be.

It is the faces.

It is the older man with both hands. It is the woman by the door, and her son, and whatever she has been telling herself about you since March. It is the thought of standing up in that same room, in front of those same people, and taking it all back.

So you have not told anybody. Not one person. And you have started building the version where you handle it privately and nobody ever needs to know, and if it goes well enough this time there will be nothing to confess.

The phone is on the arm of the chair. Her name is four swipes away. It has been four swipes away for eleven days.

The prayer went in before the fall

There is a sentence Jesus said to a man before that man failed, and the order of it is the whole of tonight. You were prayed for in advance. Luke 22:32 has the praying happening before the denial rather than after it, and the Holy Spirit put that sequence into the record deliberately, because a prayer that goes in first cannot be forfeited by whatever happens second.

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.Luke 22:32

Read the small word sitting in the middle of it. Not if. When. The turning back is spoken of as a settled matter in the same breath that the failure is predicted, and the man it was said to walked straight out and did the exact thing he had sworn in front of everybody he would never do.

Peter is not in this passage by accident. He is the one who stood up in the room. He is the loudest man in the gospels on the subject of his own reliability, he said it publicly, he said it to the Lord's face, and a few hours later he was warming his hands at somebody else's fire telling a servant girl he had never met the man.

So hear the thing underneath the thing, because it is not the relapse. You have been carrying something a great deal heavier than the relapse for four months, which is the memory of the faces in that room, and Scripture nowhere treats a public testimony as a bond you have defaulted on, and the Spirit who moved in that room in March has not filed a claim against you since.

And the update you gave was not a lie. You were not performing. Something real happened, and Lamentations 3:23 says the mercy that met you that morning was new that morning, and the Spirit of God did not hand it over as a final allocation with a warning printed on the back of it.

There is no ledger. And that is not a gentle way of saying the ledger has a generous limit, which is what most people hear, and it is not what is being said. There is no book anywhere with your name at the top and a running total underneath, because mercy is not a stock cupboard that a man can empty by coming back to it twice.

So here is what the falling did to your standing, which is nothing at all. You are upheld. Psalm 37:24 says a man may fall and not be utterly cast down, because the LORD holds him up with His hand, and the Spirit of God has that hand under you tonight while you sit in a chair drafting an email nobody is going to receive.

One plain thing, and it goes in the middle of this rather than politely at the end. If being back in it has brought thoughts of ending your life, or of everybody being better off, then that gets said tonight, out loud, to a living person. In the United States, 988 answers by call and by text. Anywhere else, emergency services, or the crisis line for your country. Nobody who picks that up is counting how many times, and none of it means your faith failed. God put real rescue into human hands on purpose, and asking twice is obedience, not defeat.

Now look at what the second half of that verse hands to the man who fell. Strengthen thy brethren. You have work waiting on the other side of this that was assigned before you ever got there, and the written word gives it specifically to the one who went down and came back, and the Spirit of God does not consider a man disqualified by the very thing that will let him sit with somebody else.

Which leaves one thing standing between you and the second rescue, and it is not God's willingness. It is a sentence. Somebody has to be told, and the somebody is almost certainly the same person who sat up with you the first time, and the reason that sentence is so hard to type has nothing to do with the sentence. It is the face that arrives in your head while you type it.
