Other People Are Standing On My Story

This message is for to ask again when other people have been using your story as their own reason to keep hoping

There is a woman at your church who keeps a card in her purse with your name on it.

You know this because she told you at the end of an evening, holding your arm the way people do when they have decided to say a thing. Your name is on the card and she prays it, and when her son was at his worst last year she would take that card out in the parking lot and read it and remember that people come back.

You said thank you. There is not much else to say.

Eleven months have gone by since then, and in those eleven months the testimony got given twice. Once at the women's evening with a microphone. Once at a table with somebody new, quietly, without one.

And nine days ago it started again.

Not dramatically. Nothing anybody would have noticed from the outside. It started the way it started the first time, which is the part that frightens you most, because it means the shape of it was recognizable on day one and the day went ahead anyway.

So here is where things are now.

You are standing on a Tuesday holding a truth with other people's weight resting on it. If it gets said, the card comes out of the purse. If it gets said, the woman at the table who was going to try thinks about the whole thing differently. If it gets said, three people you could name go quiet in a way you would feel from across a room.

And underneath all of that is a smaller and uglier and more private thing that has not been said even in an empty room.

There is no idea how to go back and ask for the same thing twice.

It is not that God seems to have run out. That is not it at all. It is that the first time, the one asking had never asked before, and now the asking has a history attached to it, and the mouth will not do it.

So it has been nine days.

What the story was actually evidence of

Let me take the small thing first, because it is the one sitting underneath everything else.

The card, and the woman at the table, and the three people are all real, and we will get to them, and nobody here is dismissing them. But they are not the reason your mouth will not work. The reason is a sentence almost nobody says out loud: asking the second time costs something the first time did not.

So let us go straight at the thing that makes it cost.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.2 Corinthians 4:7

An earthen vessel is a clay pot. Cheap, fired, ordinary, the sort of thing a household owns twenty of and does not bother counting. Paul is not being modest there. He is making an argument, and the argument is structural: the fragility of the container is the proof of where the power came from.

So take the main thing early, before another word of teaching. You are still the same jar you were on the day the treasure went in, because 2 Corinthians 4:7 puts the excellency of the power in God and not in us, and the Holy Spirit never placed anything inside you that depended on the clay holding.

Which means the testimony those people are standing on was never a testimony about you. It never once was. It was always evidence about Him, and the jar was in the picture to make the point rather than to carry the weight.

That changes what a crack does to a story. Read 2 Corinthians 4:9: cast down, but not destroyed. A man wrote that line about his own visible damage, out loud, in a letter that got read to congregations, and the same Spirit who carried him through the writing of it is in the room tonight. You were never the load-bearing part of what those people believe.

One plain thing right here, because it outranks the whole page. If nine days in there are thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here any more, tell one living human being out loud tonight, and tell them the true version rather than the manageable one. A friend, your doctor, an emergency line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person answers. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does the same work. That is not a failure of faith, and saying it makes nobody a burden. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

Now, there is a night in Luke 22 where Jesus tells a man to his face that he is about to fail, and then says in the very same breath: I have prayed for you, and when you are turned back, strengthen your brothers. The praying came before the failing. The job came after it. The Spirit of God has been holding that same order over you for nine days, and you were prayed for before any of this started.

Then the asking itself. Lamentations 3:23 says the compassions are new every morning, and new every morning is not a quota waiting to be audited, it is a statement about the nature of the supply, and the Spirit hands out today's without once checking yesterday's receipt. You have full access tonight, nine days in, and nothing about a second time makes the door heavier.

And none of it was a surprise upstairs. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, so the fragility was in the file long before the first rescue, and the Holy Spirit did not learn anything new about you last week. You were rescued the first time by a God who already knew this could happen.

Now the card, and the table, and the three people.

Here is what nobody says about being somebody's evidence. The thing that actually strengthens a person is not a story that finished. It is a story still being written by somebody who keeps being reached. A woman who came back once is a lovely story. A woman who came back, and got into trouble again, and was met again, is a doctrine.

That is not permission to be careless, and it is not an argument for making a display of it. Who to tell, and how much, and when, is a matter of wisdom and of the people involved, and this page is not going to pretend to know your Tuesday. But the fear that the truth would demolish somebody has the mechanism running backwards.

The breakthrough

So you ask. Tonight, out loud, for the same thing, with no preface in front of it explaining the nine days. Hebrews 7:25 says He always lives to make intercession, which means somebody has been asking on your behalf continuously since before Tuesday, and the Spirit is not waiting on a better introduction from you. You have a permanent intercessor, and He has not broken off once.

Then the story goes back where it belongs. 2 Corinthians 4:7 puts the excellency of the power in God rather than in the container, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps it there. You were always the jar, and the jar was never the reason anybody in that room started hoping.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing up. What gets spoken here belongs to you in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is an ambassador repeating what the King has already ruled, not a woman arguing her own case. 2 Corinthians 4:7 is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what carries it, and how He answers this time, by what route and through which people, is His to decide.

  1. Card in her purse, you are not a reason for me to stay quiet and you were never carrying my name alone. 2 Corinthians 4:7 puts the treasure in a clay jar so that the excellency of the power reads as God's and never as mine, which is what that card was evidence of all along. The story stands, and it stands on Him.
  2. Shame of the second time, get out of my mouth. In the name of Jesus I ask tonight for the same thing with nothing in front of it, because the compassions are new this morning and were never once a quota. I ask as somebody who was prayed for before any of this started.
  3. Lord, You knew my frame before the first rescue and the ninth day is not news to You. Your word says the treasure sits in a clay jar so the excellency of the power is Yours, and Your Spirit has not broken off for one hour of these nine days, so there is no explaining to do tonight. I am standing up and asking You for the same thing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
