Paying Twice For The Same Thing

This message is for to stop paying a second time for something that was already paid in full, because that labor is what is wearing you out

The second Saturday in March, and you are at the counter at Hale's with your hat in your hand.

There is a number on the invoice the man has turned around to face you. You know that number. You know it because you paid it, in cash, on the twelfth of January, standing in this exact spot with your boots on this exact worn patch of linoleum.

The receipt is in your shirt pocket. It has been in your shirt pocket since January. It went through the wash once and dried on the radiator and you smoothed it out with the side of your thumb and put it back, because a man keeps his receipts.

And the fellow behind the counter, who is not a bad man, who is only reading what the screen tells him, says there is a balance.

Now watch what your hand does.

Your hand goes to your back pocket.

Not to your shirt pocket, where the proof is, folded soft as cloth. Your back pocket. Your wallet. Because somewhere in you there is a much older instruction than that receipt, and it says that when a man is told he owes, he pays, and he does not make a scene, and he certainly does not stand at a counter arguing about a thing that has already cost him once.

You have the proof on you. You could lay it flat on the counter and end this in four seconds.

Instead you are counting what is in the wallet and working out which other bill slides this month.

And you already know this is not about a feed store.

Something in your life was paid for. Fully. Once. And every few weeks somebody comes to the counter and says there is a balance, and every few weeks your hand goes to your back pocket, and you pay it again. In worry. In penance. In that hard grinding effort you have been calling faithfulness for eleven years.

You are not tired because the trouble is heavy.

You are tired because you keep paying for it twice.

Why the second payment is the one that breaks a man

You have been paying twice, and it is not a character flaw and it is not thin faith. Hebrews 10:14 says one offering perfected forever the people being made holy, and the Holy Spirit is standing in this with you tonight while that sentence gets read out loud over an account you have been servicing for years.

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.Hebrews 10:14

Read the tenses like a man reading an invoice, because they are the whole argument. Perfected: done, finished, no further work outstanding. For ever: no expiry, no annual review. One offering: not an installment plan, not a standing arrangement, not a thing that gets topped up after a bad week.

Hebrews 10:12 carries a detail most of us skip. After the one offering, He sat down. Under the old arrangement a priest never sat down, because there was no chair in the tent; the work was never over, so there was nowhere to put a chair. This one finished and took a seat. His word puts the posture in on purpose, and the Spirit of God has been trying to get you to notice it, because you are still standing at a counter that closed a very long time ago.

Now the part that explains the tiredness, and it is the reason this whole page exists.

The paying is not extra effort stacked on top of the trouble. The paying became the trouble. You were carrying the thing and carrying the receipt at the same time and treating both as live weight, and it is written in that same verse that only one of them ever had any weight in it at all, and the Spirit has been working at your fingers on that wallet for longer than you know.

Now the fence around this, and it does not come down, because a tired man can take a true thing and drive it straight off a bend.

Going still means the self-rescue stops. It is not the same as giving up, and it never once meant walking away from help. It has nothing to do with your medication, your doctor, your counselor, your meeting, or the program you are four weeks into. Keep every one of them and keep the appointment on Thursday. His word never sent a sick man out of the house of healing, and the Spirit of God does not lead anybody away from the care He Himself arranged. Stopping the second payment and stopping treatment are opposite acts, and only one of them is in this article.

And one plain thing, in ordinary words, because it outranks everything else here. If the tiredness has got as far as thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here, then tell one living human being tonight, out loud, before you sleep. Somebody in the house, a doctor, a crisis line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person picks up. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does the same job. Needing that is not a failure of faith and it does not make anybody a burden. God put real rescue into human hands deliberately, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

The breakthrough

So we are going to stop paying.

Not stop caring. Not stop showing up. Not stop taking the pill or making the meeting or answering the phone when your sister calls. Those are not payments; those are how a person lives.

Stop the other thing. Stop the penance. Stop the rehearsing at two in the morning. Stop the volunteering for one more duty in the hope that the ledger finally comes back clean, because the ledger came back clean a long time ago and nobody thought to tell you where the receipt was kept.

You have the proof on you already, and tonight is nothing more than laying it flat where it can be read. His word calls it one offering, perfected for ever, and the Spirit of God is at your elbow while you do the single thing that ends the argument at the counter.

Your hand does not move.

That is it. That is the whole breakthrough. It will feel like nothing at all for about four seconds, and then it will feel like the first real rest in a decade.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a man haggling with a creditor. It belongs to you because Hebrews 10:14 says one offering perfected for ever the ones being made holy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old sentence stand up and speak in a tired man's mouth. When the tiredness lifts, and how fast, and what He does with the years already spent paying twice, is His to decide, and you leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Bill I already paid, you are not owed a second time, and my hand is coming off the wallet. Hebrews 10:14 says one offering perfected for ever the people being made holy, and the Spirit of God is the one who put the proof where I can feel it against my chest. That account closed on a hill outside a city, and it has stayed closed every day since.
  2. Penance, get off my evenings and out of my two in the morning. I am a settled account, and I say it in the name of Jesus, who made the one offering and then sat down, which is what a man does when a job is finished. What lives in those hours now is a paid man getting some sleep.
  3. Lord, You offered once and then You took a seat, and I am not standing at that counter any more. Your word says the perfecting is finished for ever, and Your Spirit is the one who kept the receipt against my ribs through every month I forgot it was there. I am sitting down now with my hands open, and I am staying sat.
