When I Stopped FightingIsaiah 26:3

The Conversation You Keep Rerunning

This message is for to stop relitigating the same three minute conversation every night, because the rerunning is the thing holding you under

It is two forty in the morning and you are back in March.

Three minutes. That is the whole length of it. A doorway at work, or a kitchen, or a car with the engine off, and somebody said the thing, and you said something back that was too small, and they left, and that was that.

Except it was not that. Tonight you say it better. Tonight you have the sentence that would have stopped them in the doorway, the one with exactly the right amount of calm in it, and you deliver it to the ceiling, and it is devastating and it is fair and it is nine months too late.

Then you run it again with a different opening. Then you run their side, in their voice, doing the voice properly, giving them their strongest case so you can beat it honestly, because you are not a person who wins by cheating, even in a room that does not exist.

Somewhere around the fourth pass you notice the fan has been going the whole time and you have not heard it.

You are not angry, exactly. What you want is a jury. One impartial person to sit down at the end of the bed and hear both accounts and say it out loud: you were right, or you were not right. Either one would do. Then you would sleep.

And this is the part that has started to frighten you. You are better at those three minutes than you are at most of your actual life. You could recite them. You have rehearsed a rebuttal for a person who has moved on and probably could not quote a single line of it back to you.

The fan is still going. It is two fifty one now.

The rerunning is what is holding you under

First, the thing nobody says to a person doing this. The rerunning is not a character flaw and it is not vanity. It is a mind trying to finish something that got left open, and a body will keep tensing a muscle around an old injury for months after the injury, and nobody calls the muscle stupid for it.

But there is a cost and it is specific. The three minutes ended in March. The rerun did not.

Isaiah 26:3 says God keeps a person in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him, and the verb is worth slowing down over. Stayed. Propped, leaned, set down on something that holds weight. It is not an instruction to think harder; it is a description of where the weight goes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves it there. You have been leaning the whole weight of nine months on a three minute conversation, and a conversation cannot hold a person up.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.Isaiah 26:3

Read who does the keeping. He keeps. The mind is stayed, which is a leaning shape rather than a straining one, and either way it is not somebody gritting their teeth at two in the morning until peace arrives on schedule.

So here is the going still, and it has to be said carefully because it gets heard wrong. Going still means ending the self-rescue effort: the closing argument, the rehearsal, the case assembled in the dark. It is not the same as giving up, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with stopping treatment, leaving a program, skipping medication or turning away the people who are helping. Those hands are part of the rescue and they stay exactly where they are. Scripture never once asks a person to refuse help in order to look trusting, and the Spirit of God has never asked a tired human being to prove anything. You are not being told to let go of what is holding you up.

What actually stops is the trial. Every rerun is an attempt to reach a verdict, and the verdict being chased is not really about them. It is about whether you were reasonable, whether you were unfair, whether you were as small as you sounded in that doorway. Romans 8:1 has already handed down the only finding that carries weight, and His Spirit reads it out inside a person instead of filing it somewhere out of reach: there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. You have been asking a jury for something that was settled before the asking started.

Something plain in the middle of this, because the small hours are where it lands hardest. If two forty in the morning has started carrying thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not waking up, that is the moment to say it out loud to one living person tonight rather than run it silently one more time. A friend, a doctor, a crisis line. In the United States, 988 answers a call or a text. Anywhere else, emergency services or the local crisis line. Saying it is not a failure of faith and it does not make anybody a burden. God has always put real rescue into human hands, and picking up a phone is obedience, not defeat.

There is a scene worth sitting with for a minute. A boat in a squall, a crew of experienced fishermen bailing for their lives, and one man asleep in the stern. Mark 4:38 keeps the cushion under His head in the account, which is a strange detail for anybody to invent, and then He stands up and says four words to the weather and the weather does what it is told. The point is not that trouble goes quiet on request. The point is who was able to sleep in the middle of it, and the same Spirit who rested on Him in that boat is the one in the room at two forty in the morning. You have never been asked to out-argue a storm.

The breakthrough

So tonight, when the rerun starts, do not argue with it, and do not start a second argument about whether to have the first one. Take the foot off.

Concretely, that means the case gets handed over rather than won. Isaiah 26:3 has the mind leaning on Him instead of on a verdict, and the Holy Spirit does the staying, so there is no technique here and nothing to perform correctly. You are not the one holding the night together, and you were never appointed to it.

And the ordinary hands stay right where they are. The doctor, the counselor, the friend who answers late, the medication on the shelf. Taking a foot off a pedal is not the same thing as taking a hand off a rope, and nothing on this page asks anybody to go without help.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your hands open. Peace of this kind is given to you rather than achieved, because Christ is in you, and it is written down long before it is spoken, with His Spirit doing the staying while the words are said. When the quiet comes, and how, whether tonight or over weeks, and through which doctor or friend or ordinary Tuesday morning, is His to decide, and you are not being scored on any of it.

  1. Three minutes in March, you are finished and you were finished the day they happened. Isaiah 26:3 says the mind stayed on God is kept in perfect peace, and His Spirit is the one doing the staying at two forty in the morning. The rerun does not get the rest of my nights.
  2. Verdict I keep chasing, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus, and you do not get to hold my head under for another night. Romans 8:1 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and His Spirit reads that out over me rather than leaving it filed somewhere I cannot reach. I belong to God, and I am done trying that case.
  3. Father, You have kept me through nine months of two forty in the morning and I did not notice most of it. Your word says the mind stayed on You is kept in perfect peace, and Your Spirit is holding the weight I keep trying to carry myself. My hands are open on my knees, and I am leaving the night with You.
