Nobody Came BeforePsalm 147:3

Named Without Being Described

This message is for to have the wound named without having to describe it, and to be believed all the same

You are sitting in a car outside a building with the engine off, and the appointment is in nine minutes.

This is the fourth one. Not the fourth appointment. The fourth person.

The first was a man at a church who was genuinely kind and who leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and said, so, tell me a bit about what happened. The second was a form, which is somehow worse, because a form has boxes and the boxes have sizes and the sizes are wrong. The third was a friend who meant every word of it and who said you can tell me anything, and then waited with her whole face.

And every single one of them had every right to ask. You do not blame one of them. They cannot do anything with what they cannot see, and they know that, and asking is the only tool anybody has.

But here is what happens in your chest when the question arrives. Something closes. Not slowly, either. It is a door on a spring, and it is shut before you have decided anything about it, and then you are sitting there in a warm room being perfectly pleasant with a shut door in your chest.

Because the thing they are asking you to produce is not a story. It is a child. And to hand him over you have to go back and get him and carry him up here into a room with a box of tissues on a low table, and put him on the table, and let a person who has known you for four weeks look at him.

And every time you have tried it, what comes out instead is a shrug and a version so small and so tidy that it is basically untrue, and then you are sitting there having said something false about the realest thing there is.

So you stopped starting the sentence.

Not stopped going. You go. You are in the car right now. You have got very good at the nine minutes before, and at the forty five minutes of talking near it, and at the walk back across the parking lot afterwards, which is the part where you promise yourself next time.

And underneath every bit of that there is something much older, which is this. You called for a long time, when you were small. The calling did not produce anybody. And in all those hours you learned something about what a voice is worth in an empty house, and you have never once been able to unlearn it.

What the verse leaves out on purpose

I am not going to ask you what happened. Not in this paragraph and not in any of the ones after it.

I want to say that plainly at the top, because otherwise you will read the whole page braced for the turn where I ask, and a person reading braced is not really reading.

Here is the verse this is built on, and I want you to notice what is missing from it.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.Psalm 147:3

There is no intake. There is no assessment. There is no clause anywhere in it about the wound being described, categorized, dated, evidenced or made presentable before the binding starts. It is the shortest possible sentence about the longest possible thing, and the shortness is not carelessness. The shortness is mercy, and it was put there by somebody who knew exactly who would be reading it.

You have already been named by God without ever once being described, and Psalm 147:3 is the whole proof of it rather than my reassurance to you. The Holy Spirit is the one who kept that verse this short, and He kept it short for the sake of people who cannot say it.

The oldest thing in the room

Now the older thing, and I will not go past it quickly.

You called for a long time as a child, and nobody came. That is what happened, and I am not going to soften it, and I am not going to give you a reason for it either.

I want to be very clear about that last part, because reasons are what get handed to people in your situation and they are almost always a way of closing the subject early. I am not going to tell you that the people who did not come were doing their best. I am not going to tell you they were carrying something themselves. I do not know, you did not ask, and it is not the point. The silence is not being justified here. It is being answered, which is a completely different thing.

Here is what the record actually claims, and it claims it without any of that. The call was heard. Not overheard. Not noted. Heard, by God, at the time, in that house, at the actual hour, at the actual volume, including the parts of it that never came out as sound at all.

You were heard then, and His word is where that stands rather than in anything you can remember about how it felt, and the same Spirit who was in that house is the one in this car.

One plain thing, said straight, because a page about a child calling gets read by people at the bottom of something. If what is in you tonight is the thought of ending your life, that one does not wait for the right words either, and it does not go to a page. In the United States, call or text 988 and a person answers, and you do not have to explain the history to get help in the present. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line, and if you cannot bring the number up, say that to whoever picks up and let them find it. Then tell one living human being in your house or on your phone before you sleep. That is not a failure of faith and it does not make you a burden. God put real rescue into human hands deliberately, and a hand taken tonight is obedience and not defeat.

What the fourth person actually needs

Something practical, and then I will leave it.

The description has been treated as the price of admission, and the people asking have not been charging it. What a good counselor, a good pastor, a good friend actually needs is far less than the thing you cannot hand over. Very often it is one sentence with no detail in it at all. Something happened when I was small and I cannot talk about it yet.

That sentence is not a shrug and it is not a lie. It is true, it is complete, and it hands somebody the shape of the room without making you carry the child up the stairs.

You have a true sentence available tonight that costs nothing you cannot pay, and His word is what makes that more than a technique, because in Psalm 147:3 the binding up starts before any sentence at all, and the Holy Spirit is already at work in you while you are still hunting for words.

You have already been believed by the One whose believing settles it, and Scripture does not make His binding wait on your telling, and the Spirit of God is not sitting across a low table from you with a notepad.

The breakthrough

So put the child down.

Not away. Down. For years now he has gone out in front of you in every doorway, held up like something that has to be inspected before anybody is allowed in, and there is no door in the kingdom of God where that inspection happens.

You are carried into that room already held rather than on approval, and Psalm 147:3 is where that rests rather than on how much of it you manage to say tonight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been carrying the unsayable part of it all along.

And hear the difference between two sentences that sound alike. Nobody came is a fact about a house. Nobody came for you is a verdict about a person, and it is not true, and one of those two sentences has been quietly doing the work of the other one since childhood.

You were called for, and you have been come for, and His word says the binding up is already being done rather than pending, and the same Spirit who heard the calling in that house is the one who has never treated your silence as an absence of evidence.

And I will not put a timeline on the mending, because that belongs to Him and I would only be guessing. What I can tell you is what the verse does. He heals the broken in heart. He binds up their wounds. There is nothing in between those two clauses where a form goes.

Declare this over yourself

Say these when the twenty seconds are done, hands still flat. The binding up belongs to you in Christ and it was never priced at a full account of what happened, because Psalm 147:3 is written without one condition attached to it, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding it steady over you while you speak. What He does with those years and how He does it is His to decide, and never having been able to narrate them has not once been held against you.

  1. Question I cannot answer out loud, you do not get to be the door. Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds, and there is no clause in it about a description being produced first. What is bound up in me was bound by a God who was in the house at the time and did not need telling.
  2. Lesson about the worth of my own voice, let go of my throat in the name of Jesus. The calling that got no answer in that house was heard by God on the day it was made, and He has kept it ever since without ever asking to hear it again.
  3. Father, You bind up wounds without asking for the details, and You have never once required me to carry the child up the stairs before You would start. I am sitting here with my hands flat on the table saying nothing for twenty seconds, and Your word and Your Spirit are what I am resting on while I say nothing at all.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
