The Second RescueHosea 6:1

Come Back Without Announcing It

This message is for to come back quietly without an announcement, when you cannot face another public turning point

The first time, you told everybody.

That was the right thing to do, and you would do it again. You stood up in front of a room full of people who had prayed for you and you said the date out loud, and somebody cried, and afterward a woman you barely knew held both of your hands and said thank you for saying it, and meant it.

You have the photo. You know exactly where it is on your phone.

And now it is a Tuesday in a completely ordinary week and you are back in it. Not dramatically. Quietly, the way it actually happens, over about eleven days, in a run of small decisions that each looked survivable on their own.

Here is what has you sitting in the parking lot with the engine off. It is not the thing itself. You know the shape of the thing. It is the announcement. It is standing back up in front of the same room, taking the microphone a second time, and watching people rearrange their faces.

They would be kind. That is somehow the worst part. They would be so kind, and somebody would say the right words about grace, and you would watch one specific expression cross one specific face, and you would carry that expression around with you for the rest of the year.

You cannot do the big version again. There is nothing in you that can manufacture it, not the tears, not the nerve, not the moment. And because the only route back you know is the one with a microphone at the end of it, you have quietly concluded there is no route back.

So the engine is off, and you have been out here for twenty minutes, and the front doors are open, and there is a side door as well.

Coming back was never a performance with an audience

Hosea 6:1 is the shortest way back in the whole Bible and it is one sentence long. Come, and let us return to the Lord. That is the entire procedure. No announcement, no platform, no second speech, and the Holy Spirit is the one already saying that sentence inside people who are certain they have nothing left to say. You have a route back that does not run through a microphone.

Come, and let us return unto the LORD.Hosea 6:1

The rest of the verse is about being healed and bound up, which is what the returning is for. What is not in the verse anywhere is a stage. Read what the sentence actually asks for and notice it is a direction rather than a ceremony. Come and let us return. That is somebody turning around on a road, which is a thing a person can do in a parking lot with the engine off, in silence, in about four seconds.

And a second return is not a lesser category of return. Nothing anywhere in Scripture keeps a tally beside a person's name or grades a coming back by whether the room got to hear about it, and the Spirit of God has never once handled a quiet return as a downgrade. What you have been dreading is not the face of God. It is one particular human expression, on one particular human face, in a room you can picture from the parking lot.

Now the arithmetic, because somebody in this position always runs it. It treats mercy as a quantity with a level in it, and it assumes a good part of that level went on the first rescue. Lamentations 3:23 says His compassions are new every morning, which describes a supply that carries no balance forward at all, and His Spirit brings this morning's without reference to what the last one cost. You have not been quietly moved onto some other arrangement, and you were never on one with a limit written into it.

A plain word in the middle of this, because a second time is exactly when people go quiet in the wrong direction. If being back in it has started to come with thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being around any more, that is the thing to say out loud tonight to one living person, and it does not wait for a good moment. A friend, a doctor, a crisis line. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, emergency services or the local crisis line. Saying it is not a failure of faith and it does not make anybody a burden. God has always put real rescue into human hands, and reaching for one of them is obedience rather than defeat.

There is a return in the record that had no audience at all. Peter denied Him three times beside a fire in a courtyard and went out and wept, and the next thing that happens to the man is breakfast on a beach: a charcoal fire, fish already cooking, three questions, and not one of them putting the denial up as a headline. John 21:9 keeps the fire of coals in the picture, which is the same small detail as the courtyard, and the same Spirit who filled him a few weeks later is the one sitting in the parking lot tonight. You were never going to be restored at a podium, and you have never needed a room to witness it.

Nobody announced that breakfast. There was no service afterward, no testimony slot, no photograph. Three questions, a job handed back, and a walk up the beach.

The breakthrough

So come back through the side door.

Not eventually. Not once there is something worth reporting, and not after a run of good days long enough to build an announcement out of. Tonight, in the car, with the engine off, in one sentence that nobody hears.

That sentence is the whole return. Hosea 6:1 gives it in six words and attaches no ceremony to it at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person to say it rather than a person working themselves up into it. You are turned around by the time it is out of your mouth, and you were never required to prove it to a room first.

And the people stay in the picture. Tell the one who already knows, when you can, or the doctor, or whoever has been holding the thread of this with you. Coming back quietly is not the same as coming back alone, and the side door leads into the same building as the front one.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the car, out loud, with nobody in the passenger seat. This belongs to you because Christ is in you, and it is written down long before it is ever spoken, with His Spirit in the seat beside you making it more than noise in a parking lot. What the coming weeks look like, and who ends up knowing, and how long the ordinary work of it takes, is His to decide, and you are not being asked to produce a moment for anybody.

  1. Microphone at the front of that room, you are not the way back and you never were the way back. Hosea 6:1 says come and let us return to the Lord, and His Spirit is the one who put that sentence in my mouth in a parking lot at seven in the evening. I am returning tonight, and the room does not have to hear it.
  2. Shame of the second time, you are put out of this car in the name of Jesus, and you do not get to decide what my coming back is worth. Lamentations 3:23 says His compassions are new every morning, and His Spirit brought me this morning's without once mentioning what the last one cost. I am somebody who is welcome back, and I am going in quietly.
  3. Father, You have never once asked me for a speech, and You did not ask for one the first time either. Your word says come and return, and Your Spirit is the reason I am saying it out loud in a car instead of waiting for a night I could make something of. I am turning the engine on now, and I am coming back to You without announcing it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
