Too Far DownPsalm 40:2

Below the Part You Told Them

This message is for to be reached at the actual depth, not the tidier one you gave the friend who asked how you were doing

Somebody asked, and you had the answer ready before they finished the question.

You have had that answer ready for a while. It is a good one. It is honest enough to be believable, which is the thing that makes it work. It admits something. It says you have been struggling, or it has been a rough few months, or you are not sleeping brilliantly, and every word of that is true, and every word of it sits about four floors above where you actually are.

They took it well. They were kind. They said the right things and they meant them and they offered something practical, and you said that would be great, and afterwards you sat in the car for a minute before you started it.

Because here is what happened in that conversation, and you were the only one in it who knew.

They helped the version. Not you. The version.

And the version is doing fine. The version has a plan and a couple of good days a week and a book somebody recommended. The version can be prayed for at a normal volume in a normal room.

You are somewhere underneath the version, and it is quiet down there, and it has been going on longer than anybody knows.

Then it happens again the next week with somebody else. And again. And every single time it works, a small load-bearing beam gets knocked out, because a person cannot be reached at a depth they never gave anybody the address to. So the help keeps arriving at the right house and the wrong floor, and you keep saying thank you, and the loneliest thing in the world turns out not to be having nobody. It is being surrounded and unreached.

The reach is the claim, not your resilience

I am not going to describe the pit. You live there and you do not need a tour guide, and there is a kind of writing that lingers in the dark because it moves people, and it has no business being anywhere near you tonight.

So let me be short about the low place and long about the arm.

There is a psalm that starts in the mud. Not metaphorically tidy mud. The word is the sucking clay at the bottom of a cistern, where a man cannot get a foothold and every attempt to climb puts him further in, and the whole point of the picture is that there is no version of this where he saves himself.

He drew me up out of the pit of noise and mud, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps firm.Psalm 40:2

Read the verbs again and notice who is doing all of them. He drew. He set. He made firm. The man in that hole contributes exactly one thing to the entire operation, and it is not strength, and it is not climbing, and it is not a good attitude. He cried out. That is the whole of his part.

Now the thing I actually came to say.

You have quietly worked out that you are further down than the people helping you understand, and from that you have drawn a conclusion, and the conclusion is wrong. Watch which half of it the Holy Spirit is agreeing with. He agrees about the depth, because Psalm 139:8 has a man making his bed in the lowest place there is and finding God already standing in it. He does not agree with one word of what you have decided the depth means.

You concluded that the depth is the problem.

The depth is not the problem. The depth was never once the problem, because the claim of this whole business is not that you were shallow enough to be reached. The claim is that He comes all the way down. Ephesians 4:9 says it in a single clause, that He descended first into the lower parts of the earth, and the same Spirit who brought Him back up out of there has been sitting with you at your real number the whole time you assumed nobody was.

The One we are talking about did not send a rope from a comfortable height. He came into the world in a feeding trough in a back room of an overrun town. He went to the funerals. He touched the man everybody had agreed not to touch. He went into death itself, all the way in, not to the edge of it, and He came back out, and the whole of Christianity is one sentence long: there is no floor beneath which He does not go.

So the honest question is not whether you are too far in. It is whether there is a floor down there that He has not already stood on. Romans 8:39 answers that one by name, because depth is on the list of things that cannot separate you from the love of God, and the Spirit who moved a man to write that list did not leave your particular floor off it.

There is not. There is not one, and there is not going to be one, and you can stop checking.

And now, gently, the thing about the version.

You did not build it because you are a liar. You built it because at some point you told somebody the real thing and it went badly, or because the real thing is so heavy that handing it over feels like putting it on their back, and you love these people and you did not want to do that to them. That is not deceit. That is a man carrying something alone out of consideration for other people, which is one of the most decent and most destructive things a person can do. Which is why Psalm 34:18 puts God near to the ones with a broken heart and not near to the ones who can describe it well, and why the Holy Spirit has not spent one night of this waiting for you to word it better.

But hear this and let it land: He was never in the conversation with the version. Not once. He has been standing at the actual depth the entire time, at the real number, on the real night, with the thing you have never said out loud, and He has not moved and He has not flinched and He is not waiting for a better summary. That is not encouragement, it is written. Hebrews 13:5 has Him saying He will never leave you and never forsake you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been keeping that sentence in the room on the nights nobody else knew the room existed.

You do not have to climb up to the floor you admitted to in order to be found. He is already below it.

And one plain thing, said straight, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If down there includes thoughts of ending your life, or of not being here any more, then tonight you tell one living human being out loud. A friend, a doctor, an emergency line. In the United States you can call or text 988 and somebody will answer. Wherever you live, emergency services or your local crisis line will do it. That is not a failure of faith and it is not you being a burden. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

The breakthrough

So we are going to stop the editing.

Not with everybody, and not all at once. Just with God, tonight, in this room, out loud, at the real depth, using the actual words.

You are not confessing a failure. There is nothing to confess. You are giving the rescue the correct address, which is the one thing in this whole business that only you can do. And if the words come out badly, or come out as one syllable, or do not come out at all, Romans 8:26 says the Spirit Himself carries what a man cannot get into language, so the address arrives whether or not the sentence does.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your hand on the floor. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, which is Colossians 1:27 and not a turn of phrase, so these are not you hauling yourself anywhere; they are an ambassador repeating what the King has already said about how far He reaches, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying the words down to where you actually are. How He answers, and how quickly, and through which door and which human being, is His to decide, and none of it is ever a verdict on how far down you went.

  1. Depth, you are not a disqualification and you never were. Psalm 40:2 says He drew a man up out of the pit and out of the miry clay and set his feet on a rock, and the Spirit who put that word on the page is in this room tonight, and there is no floor in this house that is below the reach of God.
  2. Shame, get out of the doorway of my mouth. I am not too far in, and I say so in the name of Jesus, because the One who came all the way down came down past the part I never told them.
  3. Lord, You know the real number and the real night and You did not flinch at either. I am not being reached at the version any more. I am being reached where I actually am.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
