Too Far DownPsalm 139:8

Strong Became a Lid

This message is for to be reached beneath the word strong, which people have used about you so long that it has become a lid you cannot lift

The word gets to the room before you do.

You park. You check your face in the mirror for a second longer than you need to. And you already know the shape of the first sentence somebody is going to say when the door opens, because it is the same sentence every time. Here she is. Here's the strong one.

Three times now. Three services, three halls with the same urn of hot water and the same trestle table with the broken leg, and three times you were the one who found the parking, printed the order of service, rang the caterer back when they got the numbers wrong, and stood at the door where the family should have been standing, because the family could not stand.

You were good at it. That is the part nobody understands about you. You were not performing and you were not gritting your teeth. You did it well, and you meant every minute of it, and it was love, all the way down.

And then somewhere in the middle of the third one, somebody put a hand on your arm and said the word again, and it landed differently. It landed like a lid.

Because a lid is not an insult. Nobody hands you one to be cruel. They hand it to you because it is accurate, and because it is useful, and because when it is on, the room can stop worrying about you and get on with grieving the person who actually died. The lid is the kindest thing in their hands. It is also the exact reason nobody has asked you a second question in about four years.

The first question still gets asked. How are you holding up. And you have an answer ready for it, a good one, warm and quick and slightly funny, and it works so well that the conversation moves on before either of you notices that it moved on.

So now there is no room left. Not the hall. Not the church. Not the group chat that still sends you the arrangements. Not your own kitchen at half past eleven with the dishwasher running and everybody upstairs asleep, because the word followed you in there too, and it is sitting in your chair.

And underneath it there is a woman nobody has asked about in a way that would survive an honest answer.

You would have to lift it to be reached.

And that is the trouble, because a lid cannot be lifted from underneath.

He is already under there

I am not going to tell you to stop being strong. That would be one more instruction handed to a woman who is already holding all the instructions, and it would land on you the way everything lands on you, as a job with your name on it.

I want to talk about where God is standing while the lid sits on top.

There is a psalm written by a man who went looking for the far edge of God's reach and could not find one anywhere. He tries the sky. He tries the far side of the sea and the wing of the morning. Then he tries the one place a person only names out loud when they have given up being polite about how bad it is.

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.Psalm 139:8

Read what he does not claim. He does not say God comes down and hauls him out of there, not in that line. He says God is already in the room when he arrives. The being-there comes first, before the lifting, before the fixing, before anyone has a plan or a rota or a casserole.

So let me say the main thing early, because the lid has been on a long time and an answer that turns up at the bottom of the page turns up too late. You are reached underneath it right where you actually are, at the real depth and not the tidy one, and Psalm 139:8 is the reason rather than my good opinion of you, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding that line open over your kitchen tonight while the dishwasher hums.

Notice what that does to the word itself. It does not make it a lie. Every bit of the carrying was real: the parking, the caterer, the door where the family should have stood. The word is accurate. It simply is not a wall, it was never a wall, and God has never once treated it as one.

Somebody said it over you once and then everybody copied it, and after four years there is nothing left to say to you but that. God did not copy it. You were known first hand, before the room ever had a phrase for you, because Psalm 139:1 says He searched you and knew you Himself, and the same Spirit who did that searching has never for one moment mistaken your reputation for you.

Here is the mechanism, plainly, because seeing it helps. A room can only reach as far as its own information. Those people reached the version that had a word attached, and they reached it generously, and then they went home and slept well. That is not their failure. It is a limit, and limits are ordinary, and human beings have them.

There is no such limit on the other side, and this is where it gets good. Hebrews 4:15 says the One we are dealing with is not a high priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our weaknesses, and the Spirit carries that nearness right into the hall with the broken trestle leg. You have a High Priest who feels it, not a manager receiving a summary.

And one plain thing, in the middle, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If underneath the lid there are thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here any more, then tell one living human being out loud tonight. A friend. Your doctor. An emergency line. In the United States you can call or text 988 and a real person answers. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does the same job. That is not a failure of faith and it does not make you a burden to a single soul. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

Now the thing under the word, which is the real reason the lid stays on. Somewhere along the line it got decided that the ones who carry do not get carried. God never issued that. Galatians 6:2 tells a whole church to bear one another's burdens and never adds a clause exempting the reliable, and the Holy Spirit is not enforcing an exemption He did not write. You are inside that sentence, not standing outside it holding the door open for everybody else.

And the quiet ones were counted. Psalm 56:8 has God keeping a record of every wandering and putting tears into a bottle, which is a strange and tender picture for a God who could simply remember, and the Spirit of God has kept every one of yours from every one of those halls. You were seen doing it, each time, and it went into the book instead of into the floor.

The breakthrough

So the lid comes off, and not by you lifting it, because Psalm 139:8 has God underneath it already and the Holy Spirit has never needed a door opened from the inside. You were never handed the job of getting yourself reached, and there is nothing at all waiting on your strength tonight.

What is in front of you is one sentence, said out loud, in your own kitchen, with the word left out of it. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed does not get broken and a smoking flax does not get quenched, and the Spirit is the one who keeps that promise in rooms with nobody else in them. You have permission to be the reed tonight, out loud, and nothing about that undoes one hour of what you carried.

Declare this over yourself

Say these sitting down, palms up. What you speak now belongs to you in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is an ambassador repeating what the King has already said, not a woman hauling herself anywhere. Psalm 139:8 is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what carries it, and how He answers, through which door and which human being and at what hour, is His to decide.

  1. Lid, you are not a ceiling and you were never a verdict on how far help gets. Psalm 139:8 puts God in the lowest room a person can name out loud, which means He is already under this one. He is standing at the real depth, and that is where I am met.
  2. Fear that the strong never get carried, get out of my chest. In the name of Jesus I stand inside the word that says bear one another's burdens, and there is no clause in it exempting the reliable. What I carried was love, and love did not sign away my own turn.
  3. Father, You searched me Yourself and never once took the room's word for it. Your word keeps a record of the quiet ones and Your Spirit has kept every one of mine, and I am done editing the answer. I am sitting down with my hands open and telling You the real thing tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
