Off Every List

This message is for to be reached after you quietly came off every list, so that there is now nobody who would notice or know where to send help

You did not leave in a row.

That is the part that makes this impossible to explain to anybody. There was no meeting, no letter, no falling out with a person you could name. There was a Sunday you did not go because you were tired, and then a second one because the first had been so restful, and then a third that you did not really decide about at all.

Somebody messaged in the fourth week. You saw it come in while you were doing something else and you thought, I will answer that properly tonight, because it deserved a proper answer. You did not answer it that night. By the Wednesday, a reply would have needed a paragraph of explanation that you did not have, so you left it. And a message left for eleven days stops being a message and turns into a small stone in your chest.

They took you off the rota, which was reasonable. Somebody muted the group chat for you, or you muted it, and you genuinely cannot remember which. At some point in the spring there was a tidy up of the contact list, and beside your name somebody wrote moved away? with a question mark, because that was the kindest thing anyone could think of.

And now it is however long it is. Long enough that walking back in would require a story, and you do not have a story. You have a slow fade with no villain in it.

Here is the part you do not say out loud.

If it went badly wrong for you tonight, if you got a phone call, if you sat down on the kitchen floor and could not get back up, there is nobody who would know. Not nobody who cares. Nobody who would know. No address on a spreadsheet. No small group leader with your number in a phone. You came off every list quietly, without anybody doing anything wrong, and the thing about coming off quietly is that no alarm goes with it.

You are not lost the way people picture lost. You are simply not on anything anymore.

He does his own counting

Here is the detail in the hundred sheep that almost nobody stops on.

The shepherd does not find out about the missing one because somebody told him. There is no report in that story. Nobody comes running up the hill with news. He knows because he counted, and the count came back ninety-nine, and ninety-nine is a number that means anything at all only to a man who was expecting a hundred.

So the arithmetic that found you was never the church's arithmetic. You were counted before you were missed, and Luke 15:4 puts the counting in the shepherd's own hands rather than in an office, with the Holy Spirit standing over that line and reading it into the room you are sitting in right now.

What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?Luke 15:4

Now read what he does with the ninety-nine, because it is the part that refuses to sit still.

He leaves them. Out in the open country, in the dark, unattended. You have been told gently and for years that you matter as much as anybody else in the room, and that is true, and it is not quite what this verse says. This verse says the ninety-nine get left standing in the wilderness while he goes, and Scripture never once apologizes for the arithmetic afterward. The Spirit who breathed that sentence has not softened it in two thousand years of people finding it uncomfortable.

There is also a distance in you that nobody has measured, and I am not going to ask you to describe it. There is what you told people when they asked, which was fine, tired, busy, and there is the actual place you went. The gap between those two is wider than anyone knows, and the width of it has been carried alone for a long time.

That gap does not slow the search down. You are not further out than the looking goes, because Luke 15:4 draws no boundary around the wilderness and hands nobody a map with an edge on it, and the Spirit of God has never once treated a depth like yours as a logistics problem.

I want to say one plain thing here before we go on, because articles like this get read late at night. If things have got heavy enough lately that you have thought about not being here, tell one living human being tonight. A friend, a doctor, whoever picks up. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour, and anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line. You are not a burden for doing that, and it is not a failure of faith. His word puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and the Holy Spirit moves through a stranger on a phone line as freely as through a quiet room, so reaching for that number is obedience and not defeat.

Then look at how the sentence ends. It is written that he goes after the one until he find it, and that clause is the only ending the verse is given. No hour is named. No reasonable limit is set anywhere in it. The Spirit who has kept that line in front of the church for twenty centuries has never been persuaded to tidy it into something more manageable, and you are inside a search that has no closing time on it.

The breakthrough

So the moment here is smaller than it looks from where you sit, because there is nothing in it for anybody to organize.

Nobody is asking you to get back on a list. That is not the price and it never was, and if it were, the story in Luke 15 would have to be rewritten so that the sheep finds its own way home and arrives tidy. It does not do that. It gets picked up.

What is being asked is one sentence long. Let yourself be found. Luke 15:5 says the finding ends with a man putting the animal up on his own shoulders, because the animal could not walk back, and the Holy Spirit is the one setting your name inside that sentence while you sit there. You have been carried before you were ever consulted about it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these slowly, and if your voice goes, let it go and keep going. The authority in them is not confidence you are working up out of a hard year: it belongs to you because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the written word live in your mouth while you speak it. Whatever He does with the timing, He answers in His own way and the outcome is His.

  1. List, you do not decide who gets looked for. Luke 15:4 says the shepherd leaves the ninety and nine in the wilderness and goes after the one until he finds it, so my name coming off you quietly changed nothing whatever about the count.
  2. Acceptable loss, get off me. He counted to a hundred before anybody filed a report, and it is written that the search runs until he finds it, so in the name of Jesus the Spirit of God evicts the lie that I was the one worth rounding down, and the shepherd's own arithmetic stands where it was standing.
  3. Shepherd, You are already out past the ninety and nine and You are not calling this off. Your word says You go after the one until You find it, and Your Spirit is the breath in my mouth, so I say my own name out loud in this room tonight and I let myself be found.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
