Nobody Came BeforeExodus 2:24

I Went Quiet And He Heard That Too

This message is for to have the volume you gave up counted, and not be asked to explain why you went quiet

You were the loud one.

That is not family legend, it is documented. There is a school photograph where the whole row is sitting still and you are caught mid sentence with your arm up. There is a note that came home about talking. There is an aunt who still says your name and then does the impression, the one with her hand on her hip.

You sang in the back of the car. You had a voice that carried the length of a field and you used it. You were the one who told the story at the table and got all the way to the end of it while three people were trying to start something else.

And then there is a year.

You know which year. Nothing on this page is going to ask you a single thing about it, now or later. Just the year, held where it already is, and this one fact: on one side of it there is a child at full volume, and on the other side there is a child who has learned how to come into a room without the room noticing.

Nobody remarked on it. That is the strangest part of the whole thing. Adults said you had settled down, or grown up a bit, or got shy, and they said it in a pleased voice, and one of them said it was a relief. And you took the compliment, because at eight or nine or eleven you take whatever is handed over and you file it.

You never went back to it.

Thirty years, forty, and the volume never returned. You are still the person who can be in a room for an hour before anybody registers it. You still start a sentence and let it go if somebody talks across it.

And here is the thing that has never been said out loud, in any room, to anybody at all.

You called first.

Before the quiet there was calling. A long stretch of calling, at full volume, in the way a loud child calls.

And then it stopped.

The calling did not go into nothing

Nothing here is going to ask what the year held. Not one line of this needs it, and a page that requires a person to produce the details before they qualify for comfort has already failed them at the door.

And nothing here is going to explain the silence either. I do not know why nobody came, and I am not about to build a reason for it, because every reason anybody has ever offered for that is worse than the silence it was invented to cover.

There is one thing on the table tonight, and it is not an explanation. It is a fact about what happened to the sound.

There is a passage in Exodus about a people who had been calling for a very long time and had stopped expecting anything to come back.

And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.Exodus 2:24

The verse after it adds two more: God looked upon them, and God knew. Four verbs stacked in a row, every one of them His, and not a single one about the people managing to get louder first.

So take the main thing first, before anything else on this page. You were heard the entire time you were calling, because Exodus 2:24 says God heard and God remembered in that order, with nothing in between about volume or wording or whether anybody in the house was listening, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that now over a child who is currently forty.

There is a gap in that passage and I am not going to hide it from you. The hearing is in chapter two. The rescue is a long way further on. Between the two there is a stretch of time that nobody redeems by explaining it, and I will not insult you by trying.

But look at what the text does with that gap. It never puts the delay down to the people. It never says they had not been heard yet. It says the cry came up, and God heard, and then the story of the rescue begins. The hearing is not on the far side of the waiting. It stands right at the front of it.

Which brings us to the quiet. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we ought, and the Spirit Himself makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered. You were carried by that same Spirit through every year you had no words, because what takes a cry upward was never the volume of it.

And a child going silent moved nothing off you. Psalm 10:14 says He has seen it, He beholds it, and He is the helper of the fatherless, and the Spirit of God needed no louder signal to find one particular child in one particular house. You were seen in the year you went quiet, and the seeing never depended on being findable.

One plain thing here, because it matters more than anything else written on this page. If what is sitting with you tonight includes thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here any more, tell one living human being out loud, tonight, and you do not have to explain any of the history to do it. A friend, your doctor, an emergency line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person answers. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does the same job. That is not a failure of faith, and saying it makes nobody a burden. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

There is a line in Psalm 27:10 about being taken up when a father and a mother forsake, written as a plain matter of fact rather than as a consolation prize, and the Holy Spirit has been doing that taking up for as long as there has been a you. You have been held by somebody the whole way through, including the long stretch when nothing seemed to come.

Then in Exodus 3:7 God tells Moses that He has surely seen, and has heard, and knows their sorrows. Knows, rather than has been informed. The same Spirit who knew it then is keeping the whole record now, and the volume that got given up was never lost out of it. You have a full account of one loud child somewhere, and not one line of it has ever been edited.

The breakthrough

So what happens tonight is not a recovery of the volume. Nothing here is asking anybody to be loud again, and going quiet was never a fault that needs undoing. Exodus 2:24 says God heard, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept the record ever since, and you have a hearing on file from before the quiet ever started.

What is in front of you is one sentence, said at whatever volume comes out, even a whisper into a cushion in a room with the door shut. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit carries what cannot be uttered, which makes a sentence that will not finish a finished sentence upstairs. You are heard tonight at the volume you actually have.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your hand on your throat. What gets spoken here belongs to you in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is an ambassador repeating what the King has already ruled. Exodus 2:24 is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what carries it, and what He does next with the years between then and now, and how, and at what pace, is His to decide.

  1. Year I do not have to describe, you are not a gap in the hearing and you were never the year the sound stopped arriving. Exodus 2:24 says God heard and God remembered, in that order, with nothing about volume standing in between. Every call made in you went up and got there.
  2. Silence that says nobody came because it was me, get out of this house. In the name of Jesus the record was kept by the One who hears groaning with no words in it, and the quiet was carried exactly the same as the shouting. I am heard at the volume I actually have.
  3. Father, You heard the loud one and You heard the quiet one and You never once asked either of them to explain. Your word says You heard and remembered and looked and knew, and Your Spirit has been carrying what I could not say since the year I stopped saying it. I am putting my hand on my throat and speaking to You tonight at whatever comes out.
