Nobody Came BeforePsalm 34:17

Nothing Changed And It Was Heard

This message is for to have a call you made when you were small counted as heard, even though nothing at all changed at the time

You are small, and you are sitting at the top of the stairs.

You know this staircase the way you know your own hands. Fourteen steps. The fourth one from the top gives under a foot and makes a noise like a question, so you have learned where to put your weight. The landing light is off. There is a line of light under a door downstairs and the sound of a chair being moved.

You are sitting on the top step with your back against the wall and your knees up, and the wall is cold through your pajamas, and you have been there a while.

And at some point you say something.

Out loud, or nearly out loud, into the dark of that landing.

Nobody is going to ask you here what it was. Not on this page, not tonight, not ever, and you do not owe anybody the details of it to be taken seriously. Whatever it was, it was the truest thing you had, and you said it, and you were a child when you said it.

Then you listen.

That is the part that never gets mentioned. The listening. You listen so hard the whole house comes up at you: the radiator knocking twice and going quiet, a car out on the road, the chair again, a tap running and stopping.

And nothing.

Nothing that night. And then the thing that actually did the damage, which is that nothing in the morning either. There was cereal in the morning. There was a coat, and a bag, and the bus at the end of the road, and the day went on precisely as though the landing had never happened, and the world did not tilt one single degree.

So you learned something on those stairs.

You learned it the way children learn, all the way down, in the bones, without any words attached to it. You worked out that calling does not do anything. That your voice goes up into a dark landing and stops there. That whatever you say, the morning comes and the cereal is in the bowl and everything carries on exactly as before.

You are a grown man now. You have a job and a truck and people who rely on you.

And you still, at forty-something, do not really call out.

Heard is a separate fact from what happened next

You were heard on that landing. Psalm 34:17 says the righteous cry and the Lord hears them and delivers them out of all their troubles, and the Holy Spirit is in whatever room you are actually sitting in tonight, saying that over a boy who has waited a very long time for somebody to say it.

The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.Psalm 34:17

Read the verb in the middle. Heareth. Present tense, ongoing, the thing God does rather than the thing God did once for somebody impressive. Not hears if the wording was right. Not hears once the child is old enough to explain himself properly. Hears.

Now let me be plain about what this page is not going to do, because there has been quite enough of that done already.

It is not going to tell you why nobody came down those stairs. I do not know. Nobody writing to you knows, and anybody who hands you a neat reason for that night has handed you something they made up so that they could stop feeling uncomfortable. It is not going to defend anybody. It is not going to call the silence a lesson, or a plan, or a thing that was for your good. And it is never going to ask you to describe what it was about before it will take you seriously.

There is one claim here, and it is the only one, and it is enough to be going on with.

The call reached Him.

You have been doing arithmetic with a missing number since you were seven or eight years old, and that is not stupidity and it is not a lack of faith; it is a small person working with the only evidence in the room. The hearing was real and the hearing was invisible, and a child cannot see an invisible thing. His word supplies the number that was missing, and the Spirit of God is the one holding it out to a grown man tonight.

And that is the distinction the whole of this rests on. Received and rescued that same night are two different facts, and the second one not arriving on that landing does not reach back and delete the first. What happened or did not happen in that house is not being explained here, and it is not being called God's answer to you either.

You are not a man whose voice fails to carry. Psalm 34:17 puts the hearing on God's side of the sentence, where it has always been, and the Spirit who carried a small voice up out of a dark landing has not set it down in all the years since.

And one plain thing, in ordinary words, because it matters more than any of the rest. If any of this has taken you near thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here, then tell one living human being tonight, out loud, before you sleep. Somebody in the house, a doctor, a crisis line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person picks up. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does the same work. That is not a failure of faith and it does not make you a burden to a single soul. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

The breakthrough

So tonight the boy on the stairs gets told.

Not by me. By the One who was on that landing with him, through a line that was written down centuries before he was born and has been sitting on the shelf ever since, waiting for somebody to take the book down.

It is already settled and it has been settled the whole time: Psalm 34:17 says the cry is heard and the hearing belongs to God, and the Spirit of God is not asking a grown man to feel anything in particular before that counts.

Say it to him out loud, in your own voice, in the second person, the way you would say it to any child sitting on any dark staircase: you were heard. That is not sentiment, and it is not mine to hand out. Psalm 34:17 is where it comes from, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying it back down thirty years of stairs.

And then, since that boy grew into the man reading this, and calling out is the exact thing he could never do afterward: call out now. Tonight. Once. Out loud. Not because the calling needs repairing, but because it was never broken in the first place.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a grown man arguing with his own childhood. It belongs to you because Psalm 34:17 says the Lord hears the cry, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line stand up and speak over a night that everybody else has forgotten. What He does now with those years, and how the healing of them goes, and how long it takes, is His to decide, and you leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Top of those stairs, you are not the place where my calling died. Psalm 34:17 says the righteous cry and the Lord hears them, and the Spirit of God was on that landing the whole time a boy sat there listening to a radiator. That call left the house, and it arrived.
  2. Verdict I reached when I was small, get out of my mouth and off my voice. I am a man whose call arrives, and I say it in the name of Jesus, who has never once let a cry go past Him unheard. What stands on that landing now is the God who was listening the entire time.
  3. Father, You heard a boy on a staircase in a house where nothing was different by morning, and I am not calling that silence Your answer. Your word says You hear the cry and deliver, and Your Spirit kept that call safe through all the years I counted it lost. I am calling out to You tonight in the same voice that sat on those stairs.
