There is a version of you that you have been trying to build before you go anywhere near God.
You know the one. That version answers messages. That version does not do the thing at eleven at night that it swears every morning it has finished with. That version has a tidy flat and a settled face and could walk into a room of believers without doing the fast calculation about what they would think if they knew.
And the plan, which you have never once said out loud because it sounds absurd when you say it, is this: get to that version, and then come.
So you have been standing outside a door for a long time now, working on yourself in the corridor.
Here is what I want you to see. Not a theory. A scene.
A man goes into a river after a child, in his coat, in his shoes, in February. He does not take his coat off. He does not roll his trousers. He does not stand on the bank and consider his footing, because there is no version of that day in which the coat matters.
He comes out with the child and they are both filthy. There is river weed on the child's shoulder and the man has lost a shoe. Nobody at any point in that story says: we should have got her cleaned up first.
The cleaning happens on the bank. It happens with a blanket and a towel and someone's flask of tea and a great deal of shaking. It is real and it is necessary and it takes a while.
But it happens on the bank.
And I want to say this plainly to somebody who has been in the water a long time. You are not being asked to swim to the edge and present yourself. You are being asked to stop treading water and let somebody get hold of you.
The order was never negotiable
Now, look at the sentence. Not at me, at the sentence, because everything I have said stands or falls on this.
But God shows His love for us in this: that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.Romans 5:8
While.
Not after. Not once. Not when. While. The whole gospel is hanging off that one small word, and it is the word you have been quietly editing out for years. Romans 5:8 is written around the timing and not around the tidying, and the Holy Spirit is the reason that word keeps coming back to you instead of staying edited out.
Because you have been reading it as though it said once you were sorted, Christ died for you, and living as though the rescue were a reward for a repair you have not managed yet. And so every time you fail, you go back a step in a queue you invented, and the door gets further away, and the person you are trying to become before you come is a person you have never once met. Romans 5:6 says the same thing with the poetry stripped off it, that Christ died for the ungodly while they were still without strength, and the Holy Spirit has never once stood at the front of that queue waiting for a stronger one of you to arrive.
Hear it again. He moved first. He moved while. He moved into the water with His coat on.
And now hear the second half, because grace is not the same thing as pretending nothing needs changing, and a site that told you otherwise would be lying to you as thoroughly as the corridor is.
The cleaning is real. It is coming. Nobody is left on the bank in wet clothes and told it does not matter. Titus 3:5 puts the saving and the washing in one written sentence and hands the washing to the Holy Spirit rather than to you, so everything in you that is drowning you is going to be dealt with, patiently, over time, with more tenderness than you are currently able to imagine.
It just is not the entry fee.
That is the whole thing. The repair is not optional and it is not the price. It is what happens on the bank, after, in the blanket, with somebody sitting beside you who already got wet for you and has not once mentioned the shoe.
So here is the turn, and it is the turn this whole message was walking toward.
Stop working in the corridor.
You are not the one doing the rescuing here, and that is the best news in the world, because you have tried, and you know exactly how far you got. The verb belongs to Him. Ephesians 2:8 is written in the passive on purpose, saved through faith and not of yourselves, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true inside a person rather than merely agreed with. You are the object of that sentence, and being the object of it is not a humiliation, it is the only position from which anybody has ever been saved.
And one plain thing, said flat, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If tonight includes thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here, tell one living human being before you sleep: a friend, your doctor, the one person who will not make a speech about it. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person answers, at any hour. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line. That is not a failure of faith, and you are not a burden to whoever picks up. Mark 2:17 has Jesus name the sick and the physician in one breath with no shame anywhere in it, and the Holy Spirit is as present in a phone call at two in the morning as in any room where people are singing. God put real rescue into human hands on purpose. Reaching for a pair of them is obedience, not defeat.
But right now, in the room where you sit tonight, do this one thing: stop asking to be presentable first.
Come as the person you actually are tonight. That is not the second best version of this story. That is the story.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, and know what they stand on. This authority is not yours by nature. It is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as an ambassador of the King and not as an applicant. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and whatever He does with the days ahead, the outcome is His.
- Waiting, you are finished in this house tonight. Romans 5:8 says God showed His love while I was still in the water, so I stop building a better version of me to come with, and I come.
- Shame, you do not get to answer the door. His word says Christ died for me while I was still missing everything, and His Spirit is the one who walked me this far, so I am wanted now, in the state I am in now.
- Jesus, You came into the river with Your coat on, and in Your name I let go of the edge. Your Spirit is holding me while I do it, and I am not tidying myself up for a rescue that already came for me as I was.
