You have been sitting in this car park for nineteen minutes with the engine running.
You could turn it off. You have thought about turning it off four or five times now, and each time your hand has gone toward the key and stopped, because turning the engine off is a different kind of decision than sitting here is.
Through the glass panel in the door you can see a corner of the room. Not much. A bit of a table, somebody's coat over a chair, the top of a stack of folded chairs against the wall. You can hear singing, faintly, in the way that singing comes through a fire door, which is more of a shape than a sound.
Four years. It is exactly four years, and you know the date, and you have never once said it out loud to anybody.
Here is the part that keeps you in the seat. You did not leave over the teaching. There was no argument, nobody hurt you, and if you tried to explain it people would keep waiting for the offense to arrive and it never would. You left because of what was happening in your life, and because you could not sit in that room and be the person who was doing that. So you stopped, which felt at the time like the honest thing to do, and which was in fact the honest thing to do.
And then the four years happened, and the thing that made you leave did not stop. It got its own furniture. It has a routine now, and a place it lives, and a version of you that manages it, and a version of you that other people meet.
So it is not that you do not want to go in. It is that the arithmetic does not work. If you had come back in the first eight weeks, you would have come back as somebody who slipped. Now you would be walking in as somebody who lives there.
You keep imagining a future version of yourself who has sorted it out, and who parks in this car park, and who walks in clean. That version is who you have been waiting for. He does not seem to be coming, and you are still here at twenty-two minutes with your hand near the key.
The invitation was issued to scarlet
There is one verse that settles this, and it is not gentle in the way people assume. It is far better than gentle.
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.Isaiah 1:18
Read the tense of that word scarlet. It is not were scarlet. It is not once were. At the moment the invitation is spoken, the color is present, current, and still on the person being summoned. God is not describing a past. He is looking straight at the present condition and saying, come now.
So the coming was never scheduled after the cleaning. You are invited in the condition that is on you tonight, and Isaiah 1:18 puts the word now in front of the whitening rather than behind it, with the Holy Spirit reading that order over you in a parked car.
And the order matters more than almost anything else in this message, because the whole four years has been you trying to reverse it.
Now I want to be equally clear about the second half of the verse, because a message that stops at the invitation is only half honest and it leaves you with something cheaper than what God actually said. The scarlet does not stay scarlet. He says it twice, in two different pictures, white as snow and white as wool, and He says it as a settled thing rather than a possibility. The change is real. It is thorough. It is simply not yours to produce, and it is not the fee at the door. Isaiah 1:18 has God doing the whitening and the Spirit of God carrying it out, which is why the invitation can be issued to somebody in your exact condition without pretending the condition is fine.
That is the difference between being received and being tolerated. Nobody is telling you the thing in your life does not matter. It matters, and it is going to be dealt with by the same Spirit who had the promise written down, and it is not what you are being asked to carry through the door.
I want to put something plain here, in the middle of the reasoning, because a car park at night is where this can go badly. If the four years have got heavy enough that you have thought about not being here at all, please tell one living person tonight: whoever answers, a friend, your doctor, someone on the other end of a phone. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, emergency services or the crisis line where you are. You are not a burden for making that call and it is not a failure of faith. His word puts real rescue into ordinary human hands on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is as present in a call center at two in the morning as in any room with singing in it.
So the version of you that walks in clean is not the one who was ever expected. You have been waiting on a person the invitation never mentioned, and it is written that the summons goes out to crimson while it is still crimson, with the same Spirit who spoke it through Isaiah standing in the gravel beside your car.
So the moment is not a resolution about the thing in your life. It is smaller than that and it comes first.
Turn the engine off.
You are being received in the condition that made you leave, because Isaiah 1:18 opens with come now rather than come when, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the whitening once you are inside the reasoning. The mending is coming and it belongs to Him. What belongs to you tonight is the walk across the gravel with everything still true about you.
That is the whole ask. Not a cleaned version. Not a fixed date. You, at twenty-two minutes past, with the thing still in your life, going in.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you are sitting, engine off or engine running, and do not clean your voice up first. The authority in them is not a standard you have reached: it belongs to you because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the written word carry weight in a parked car. Whatever He does with the mending and its timing, He answers in His own way and the outcome is His.
- Car park, you do not get another four years of me. Isaiah 1:18 says come now, and that summons is issued to scarlet while it is still scarlet, so the Holy Spirit walks me over the gravel in the condition I am actually in.
- Condition I would have to fix first, get off me. It is written that though they be red like crimson they shall be as wool, and the whitening is His verb and never my entry fee, so in the name of Jesus the Spirit of God evicts the rule that I have to arrive already mended, and a table I get carried onto stands where that rule was.
- Father, You are the one who said come now, and You said it while the scarlet was still on me. Your word puts the washing after the coming and never in front of it, and Your Spirit is the one doing the washing, so I open my hands where I am and I come as I am.
