The Apology You Put In Front

This message is for to ask for help without the four minutes of apology you always run before the asking

You have been writing the same message for nineteen minutes.

It is four lines long. It asks for a lift to an appointment on Thursday. That is the entire content of it: a lift, on a Thursday, from somebody who has offered twice already.

The first draft was one sentence, and you deleted it because it sounded demanding. The second draft opened with a joke, and you deleted that because it looked like you were not taking your own appointment seriously. The version on the screen now begins with sorry to bother you, then explains that you know she is busy, then says no worries at all if not, twice, in two different phrasings, and then apologizes again at the end for the length of the message.

The actual ask is in there somewhere. You could probably find it.

You read the whole thing again as her. You take out the word really. You put it back. You add a small remark about being hopeless at planning, because a person who admits to being hopeless at planning is easier to say no to, and easier to say no to is the safest thing you know how to be.

Then the typing dots appear at her end, and you panic, and you close the app.

It is not the lift. You know it is not the lift. It is the four minutes of throat clearing you run before every single ask, the whole apparatus of apology built out in front of the door, so that when the door opens nobody finds a person standing there with a need. They find somebody already leaving.

The message is still sitting in the box, unsent. Thursday is in two days.

Nobody at that door has ever asked for a preamble

Hebrews 4:16 carries one adverb that takes the whole preamble apart. Come boldly. Not carefully, not apologetically, not after a paragraph acknowledging that He is busy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put that word into the invitation rather than leaving it to a person's nerve on the night. You are welcome at that door with the ask first and nothing built in front of it.

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:16

Read the two things on offer there. Mercy, which is what a person needs about the past. Grace to help, which is what a person needs about Thursday. Both handed over at the same counter, in the same visit, to somebody who walked up and said what they came for.

Then notice the order in that sentence, because the order is most of what this whole site keeps saying. Mercy comes first, and the help comes with it. Nothing is written there about a probationary period, a tidier version of the person asking, or a four minute apology to be got through before the counter opens. The Spirit of God did not install a queue in front of grace. You have never once had to become presentable in order to be received.

Now the half that gets dropped, and dropping it does real damage. Being received as you are is not at all the same as being left as you are, and anybody who tells a hurting person that nothing changes afterward is selling comfort instead of the gospel. The change is real, it is thorough, and it goes on for years. But 1 John 1:9 puts the cleaning after the coming rather than in front of it, and His Spirit does that work inside a person who has already been let in. You were cleaned up after you were carried in, in that order, and the order is not up for negotiation.

One thing straight, since this whole page is about asking. If what actually needs saying is that some part of you wants out of your own life, or that the thought of not being here has started to feel familiar, then that ask does not get a preamble either and it does not wait for Thursday. Tell one living person tonight. A friend, a doctor, a crisis line. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, emergency services or the local crisis line. Making that call is not a failure of faith and it does not make anybody a burden. God has always put real rescue into human hands, and picking up a phone is obedience rather than defeat.

There is a man in the record who gets this right by accident. Mark 1:40 has him kneel down and say seven words with no run-up at all: if You are willing, You can make me clean. No credentials, no apology for the interruption, no account of how long he has waited or how bad it has been. And the answer comes back in the same breath, with a hand put out first and the words following it, and the same Spirit who rested on Jesus that day is standing beside the unsent message on your phone tonight.

The preamble was never a moral failing, either. It is what a person builds after handing a need to somebody who made them regret handing it over. A person learns to arrive already apologizing, so that a refusal lands on somebody who was halfway out the door anyway. That is not vanity. That is scar tissue doing the job scar tissue was made for.

The breakthrough

So the message gets sent tonight. Not a better message. The same message, with the first four minutes taken off the front of it.

Delete the preamble and send the ask. Hebrews 4:16 says come boldly to the throne of grace and find help in time of need, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary tired human being able to walk up like that. You have grace to help sitting on the other side of a sentence you have been apologizing your way around for years.

And then the other half, said plainly, so nothing on this page gets heard as permission to stay exactly as things are. Being received without a preamble is the beginning of a long repair, not the end of one. Somebody who learns to ask straight becomes a different person over time, and that change is neither optional nor the price of the door. It happens after the door, which is the only order that has ever worked.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the message gone. This standing is given to you in Christ rather than earned at the door, and it is written into the invitation itself, with His Spirit in the room while the words are said out loud. Whether she says yes, and who ends up driving on Thursday, and how any of it looks by the weekend, is His to decide, and you are not on trial for how the asking went.

  1. Four minutes of sorry, you are not the price of the door and you never were. Hebrews 4:16 says come boldly to the throne of grace and find help in time of need, and His Spirit put the word boldly in the invitation so nobody would have to find the nerve on their own. The ask goes first from now on, and the apology comes off the front.
  2. Fear of being too much for people, you are put out of this room in the name of Jesus, and you do not get to write the opening of my messages any more. Romans 8:15 says what I received was not a spirit of slavery dragging me back into fear, and His Spirit is the one calling God Father in me while I press send. I am somebody who is allowed to ask, and I am asking without the run-up.
  3. Jesus, You put Your hand out and touched the man before You answered him, and You have never once needed four minutes of warm-up from anybody. Your word says I can come boldly and find help in time of need, and Your Spirit is the reason that message went with the sorry taken off the front. I am asking You the same way tonight, straight out, with nothing in front of it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
