When I Stopped FightingExodus 14:14

Hold Your Peace Is A Command

This message is for to hold your peace at the edge of the water without it meaning you have stopped obeying or stopped moving

It is eleven at night and you are standing in the back yard in your coat because you could not stay in the house.

Nine years. That is what you were adding up at the kitchen table before you came out here. Nine years of this, and you have never once not been fighting it.

You have read the books. You have kept the log. You have made the rules and broken them and made better rules. You have got up at four in the morning to rewrite yourself before the day could start. There is no strategy anyone has ever suggested that you have not already tried twice, and the reason you know that is that people keep suggesting them, and you keep saying yes, I tried that, in a voice that comes out flatter than you mean it to.

And this evening somebody who loves you said the sentence. Maybe you need to stop fighting it.

You went outside so as not to say what you were thinking.

Because when you hear stop fighting, you hear one thing and one thing only. You hear: lie down and let it have you. You hear nine years of holding a door shut with your shoulder and somebody suggesting, kindly, over a plate, that you step away from the door.

So you are in the yard, and it is cold, and the thing about being out here at eleven o'clock is that it feels exactly like standing at the edge of water.

There is something in front of you that you cannot get across. There is something behind you that has been gaining for nine years. There is no way left or right that you have not already walked into and come back from. You are at an edge, and you are out of moves, and the only two options in your head are fight harder or go under.

And an old sentence surfaces from somewhere, a sentence you heard read out when you were young enough to have your feet swinging off the pew.

The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.

You have always hated that line. It has always sounded like being told to sit down.

Go and read the verse after it. That is the whole of what tonight is about. Read the one that comes next.

The Next Verse Is An Order To Move

Here is the scene the sentence comes out of. A whole nation is pinned against the water with an army closing behind them, and they have done the arithmetic you did at the kitchen table, and the arithmetic says there is no way through.

Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will work for you today. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.Exodus 14:13 and 14

You are not being told to stop obeying. Exodus 14:14 takes one specific battle out of your hands and puts it in His, and the Holy Spirit is not in the business of asking anybody to abandon something real.

The words behind hold your peace are silence words. Be quiet. Put the noise down. Read what they were actually doing in the verses just before it and you will see which noise is meant: they were crying out in terror, and they were turning on the one man in front of them, and they were saying were there no graves in Egypt, and none of it moved the water an inch.

That is the fighting being stopped. Not effort. Not obedience. The frantic, self-rescuing noise of people trying to solve a sea.

You have been fighting a battle that was never issued to you, and Exodus 14:14 names whose it is in six plain words, and the Spirit of God has been carrying you the whole time you were swinging at it.

Now hear the next part carefully, because this is where people get hurt, and it will not be said carefully enough anywhere else.

Going still is not the same as giving up.

You are not being asked to put down your medicine, walk out of the program, cancel the appointment, or stop answering the people who have been helping you. His word never once calls obedience a fight, and the Holy Spirit does not lead a single person away from the hands God sent to hold them.

And plainly, while we are here. If tonight includes wanting to be gone, tell one living human being before you sleep, tonight, not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line. That is not a failure of faith and nobody on the other end of it is being burdened. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and picking up the phone is obedience, not defeat.

So what does stillness actually last? Look at the next verse. Not the next chapter. The next verse.

And the Lord said to Moses, Why do you cry to Me? Speak to the children of Israel, that they go forward.Exodus 14:15

You have exactly one verse of standing still before the order changes. Exodus 14:15 says speak to them, that they go forward, and the same Spirit who said hold your peace said move, and there is not one inch of contradiction between them.

Read that as a rhythm rather than a rule and it comes clear. Stop swinging. Watch who this actually belongs to. Then walk when He says walk.

And notice what they walked into. They did not stand on the beach admiring the miracle. They went down into the seabed between two walls of water, in the dark, with children on their shoulders and animals on ropes and everything they owned on their backs, and it was hours of the hardest walking those people ever did.

You were never told to become passive. His word puts an entire nation on its feet, moving all night, and the Holy Spirit set the pace of that walk from the front.

So the stillness was never the destination. It was the handover. It lasted long enough for the battle to change hands, and then the instruction was to go.

The breakthrough

You have two kinds of effort in your week, and only one of them is drowning you. Exodus 14:14 ends the one that has been trying to be its own rescue, and the Holy Spirit keeps the other one entirely intact, which is simply doing the next thing in front of you that you were actually told to do.

Take the pill. Keep the appointment. Ring the person back. Turn up on Thursday. Get in the car. None of that is fighting the sea. All of it is going forward, and going forward was the order.

What comes off you tonight is the nine years of holding a door shut with your shoulder against something that was always God's to handle.

You are held while you are standing still, and that is written into the verse itself: the Lord fights, and you hold your peace, and both of those are happening at the same moment in Exodus 14:14. The Holy Spirit is not standing back waiting for you to start swinging again before He gets involved.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority to say these words was given to you by Him, not earned by nine years of trying. This is not a technique and the outcome is His. You speak under His will and not my will, and however He answers, His word is the ground you are standing on and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live in your mouth.

  1. Water in front of me, you do not get fought tonight. Exodus 14:14 puts this battle in the Lord's hands and takes it out of mine, and the fighting has been most of what was drowning me. I am standing still at the edge of you, and standing still is an order I am obeying.
  2. Fear that says still means quitting, get off me in the name of Jesus. Going still is not the same as giving up, and the very next verse in the book hands me an order to go forward. I am done with the wrong battle, and I am moving when He says move.
  3. Lord, You fight for me, and Your word says the battle is Yours, so my hands are coming off it tonight. I am standing in this yard with my feet flat on the ground, and Your Spirit is the one who tells me when to walk. You are not asking me to quit; You are asking me to stop swinging at what already belongs to You.
