When I Stopped FightingPsalm 127:2

You Are Not Holding Up The Family

This message is for to stop carrying the belief of everybody at your table, which was never yours to hold up in the first place

It is your turn to pray, the way it has been your turn for about six years now.

Everybody's hands go still. Your father's do not, quite; he keeps a thumb on the edge of the serving dish. Your sister's boy is peeking and somehow that is always detectable. The food is hot and getting less hot, and behind you the extractor fan is still running because nobody remembered to switch it off.

You start the way you always start. Father, we thank You for this food and for the hands that made it.

And then, in the half second before the next line, you do the arithmetic you have started doing.

Your brother stopped going anywhere near a church four years ago and has said out loud, more than once, that the only reason he still half believes anything is that you seem to. Your mother has been asking the hard questions since your father's diagnosis, because you are the one who reads. Your niece, who is nineteen and does not talk to anybody, sent you a message at one in the morning last Tuesday with three sentences in it and a question mark on the end.

So you pray.

You pray well, actually. You have got good at it. You know where to put the pause, you know not to go long over food that is going cold, and you know which words bring your mother's shoulders down.

Amen, they say, and the noise starts up again straight away, and somebody passes the potatoes, and you sit there with your fork in your hand feeling the entire roof of that house resting on a prayer you just said over a casserole.

Nobody in the room asked you to hold it. That is the part you cannot explain to anybody. Nobody appointed you. There was no meeting, no vote, no moment where the job was described and handed over.

It simply became yours the way things do in families, one Christmas and one hospital corridor and one hard question at a time, and now you cannot put it down, because if you put it down you are fairly sure you know what it would sound like when it hit the floor.

Nobody appointed a load bearing wall

Start with the arithmetic, because the arithmetic is wrong.

Not wrong the way a bad mood is wrong. Wrong the way a figure written in the wrong column is wrong, so that everything totaled underneath it comes out heavy no matter how carefully the sums are done.

Psalm 127:2 was written for a man doing exactly what happened at that table, and the Holy Spirit put it in a psalm about house building on purpose. You were never the load bearing wall of anybody's faith.

It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.Psalm 127:2

Read the verse above it before taking that one personally. Psalm 127:1 says that unless the Lord builds the house the builders labor for nothing, and the Spirit of God who carried that line into the book was not being unkind to builders. You have been putting up walls on a site where the foreman never left, and the anxious bread being eaten at that table was never on the plan.

Here is where all of this gets misread, so let it be said as plainly as it can be said. Going still is not the same as giving up. Isaiah 30:15 puts real strength in quietness and confidence, and the Holy Spirit is not asking anyone to stop praying, stop turning up, stop taking the medication, stop keeping the appointment or stop answering the message that lands at one in the morning. You are released from exactly one thing, and it is a specific one: the outcome of other people's belief, which was never issued to you in the first place.

That distinction is the whole message and it is worth reading twice. Stopping the fight is not stopping the care. The hands stay busy. What comes off is the weight nobody put there on purpose.

One straight paragraph now, and it belongs here in the middle rather than tucked politely at the end. If holding all of this has reached the point where staying alive has started to feel like one more thing being carried for other people, say that out loud tonight to one living human being. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, emergency services, or the crisis line for the country where the reader lives. Making that call is not a failure of faith and nobody who makes it is a burden to anyone. God hands real rescue to people with phones and front doors on purpose, and picking one up is obedience rather than surrender.

Look at who actually holds a brother who walked out four years ago. John 10:28 puts the Father's hand under the sheep, not the cousin's hand and not the hand of the one who says grace, and His Spirit is the one who does the convincing in a man who stopped coming. You have been given a real place in that story, and it is not the place of the last thing standing between him and unbelief.

The niece who sent three sentences at one in the morning was not dispatched as a test. Scripture never once makes the messenger responsible for the outcome of the message, and the Spirit of God moves people toward whoever will answer the phone. You have a part in that, and the part is answering, not carrying.

Notice what God does with His beloved in that psalm while the house goes on standing. He gives sleep. Not a night off as a reward for finishing, but sleep in the middle of unfinished work, and the same Spirit who had Psalm 127:2 written has been trying to get somebody to lie down since the day of that diagnosis. You were a son at that table long before you were ever useful at it.

The breakthrough

So put it down, and be precise about which thing is going down.

The praying stays. The turning up stays. The message at one in the morning still gets answered, because Galatians 6:2 has believers carrying one another and the Holy Spirit hands that work out generously. What goes down is the outcome, and you were never holding that anyway; what was actually in your hands all along was the fear of what happens if you stop.

Tonight the load transfers, and it transfers to the One it was assigned to before there was a family at all. Matthew 11:28 is an invitation from a man who carries for a living, and His Spirit is what turns an invitation into an actual exchange rather than a nice sentiment. You are held by the same hand holding every person you have been praying for, and that hand has never once been at capacity.

Declare this over yourself

None of this is your grip and none of it is your nerve. It belongs to you because you are in Christ, and Psalm 127:2 stands in the book because the Holy Spirit meant a tired builder to hear it out loud. Speak these with your arms down, and however He answers for every person at that table, the house was never resting on the one who says grace.

  1. Roof, get off my shoulders. His word says that unless the Lord builds the house the builders labor for nothing, and Psalm 127:2 puts sleep into the hands of His beloved in the middle of a job that nobody has finished.
  2. Last Thing Standing, get off me in the name of Jesus. The hand under my brother is the Father's hand, it has never once been at capacity, and I am handing back an outcome that was never issued to me.
  3. Lord, You have been holding every one of them since long before I learned where to put the pause in a prayer over a casserole, and Your word gives sleep to Your beloved while the work is still unfinished. I am putting my arms down tonight and going to bed, and Your Spirit is the one keeping that house standing while I sleep.
