When I Stopped Fighting2 Corinthians 12:9

The Performance Of Being Fine

This message is for to stop performing how well you are doing for the people who were worried about you, which has become a second job

Nine o'clock. You pick up the phone before you pick up anything else.

Good morning all. Slept better. Managed the walk. Feeling much more like myself today.

Send.

Then you put the phone face down on the counter and stand there with both hands on the edge of it, because sending that took something out of you that has no name and cannot be claimed on any form.

They are lovely people. That is what makes it impossible. Your sister, two friends from before, the woman from church who brought lasagna every Thursday for a month and never once asked for anything back. They made the group when it was bad. They check it. They send hearts. When you post a photograph of the path by the reservoir, three of them reply inside the hour, and one of them says she cried a bit, in a good way.

So the update goes out every morning at nine, and by now the update has a shape. Slightly better than yesterday. Never worse. A small setback occasionally, because a straight line looks like lying, and that lesson landed in the second week.

Here is what nobody in the group knows.

Thursday was bad. Properly bad, the kind where the whole afternoon simply goes missing. And at nine o'clock on Friday morning you sat on the edge of the bath and drafted four versions of the message before you found the one that was technically true.

You did not lie. You have never lied to them. You have just become extremely good at selecting.

And somewhere in there it stopped being an update and became a job. A second job, unpaid, seven days a week, with an audience of eleven people who love you, and no sick days, because the one thing that cannot ever be sent is nothing at all.

If nothing goes out, somebody rings.

And if somebody rings, it has to be done live.

The job nobody hired you for

Let me name this precisely, because a blurred version of it gets people hurt.

There are two efforts running in your life right now and from the outside they look identical. One of them is the care. The appointments, the medication, the walk by the reservoir, the woman you see on Tuesdays, the eleven people themselves. That effort is God's provision arriving through human hands, and not one part of it goes anywhere. Not one tablet. Not one appointment.

The other effort is the broadcast. And the broadcast is what has been doing the drowning.

Going still means putting down the second one and only ever the second one. It is not the same as giving up, and it is not the same as stopping your care, and anybody who reads it that way has taken a metaphor for a medical instruction. This page will not.

There is a man in the New Testament who asked God three times to take a thing away and did not get it taken away. He is the most capable person in the whole book. And what came back to him was one sentence.

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.2 Corinthians 12:9

Made perfect in weakness. Not in spite of weakness. Not once it has been tidied up and photographed on a path by a reservoir with the light behind it. In it.

So take the main thing early, before the teaching goes any further. You are carried at the exact level you are actually at today, Thursday included, because 2 Corinthians 12:9 puts the sufficiency in His grace rather than in your presentation of it, and the Holy Spirit is standing in your kitchen at nine o'clock reading that line over the woman who wrote four drafts on the edge of the bath.

Now let me say what the broadcast really is, because it is not vanity and it is not dishonesty. It is love running in the wrong direction.

Those eleven people were frightened. They watched something happen to somebody they love and could do nothing about it, and the group was how they held on. And at some point, with nobody at all deciding it, the job of managing their fear got handed to the one person in the room least able to carry it.

God never issued that handover. Exodus 14:14 has Him telling a terrified crowd that He will fight for them and that they are to hold their peace, so holding your peace is a command rather than a collapse, and the same Spirit who said it at the water is the one saying it over a kitchen counter. You were never given the job of carrying eleven people's fear about you.

And no version of you has ever had to be brought up to date. Psalm 139:4 says there is not a word on the tongue that He does not know altogether, and the Spirit of God was inside Thursday's missing afternoon the whole time it was missing. You have never once had to draft anything for Him.

One plain thing right here, because it matters more than everything else on this page. If what is actually happening includes thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here any more, then tell one living human being out loud tonight, and tell them the real version rather than the nine o'clock one. A friend, your doctor, an emergency line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person answers. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does the same work. That is not a failure of faith, and saying it out loud makes nobody a burden. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

Underneath the drafting there is a specific fear worth naming out loud: that the real number would be too heavy for them. Romans 12:15 tells a church to weep with those who weep, which is an instruction those eleven people have never once been given the chance to obey, and the Holy Spirit hands weight out rather than piling it on one person. You are inside a body built to take a real answer.

There is a prophet in 1 Kings 19 who ran until he could not run any more, lay down under a tree, and asked God to end it. What arrived was not a lecture and not a schedule. An angel touched him, twice, said the journey is too great for thee, and gave him bread and let him sleep again. You were not built for a journey this size alone, and the Spirit of God has never once mistaken exhaustion for failure.

The breakthrough

So the broadcast goes down and the care stays up, and the order matters more than anything else here: every appointment stays, every tablet stays, every Tuesday stays. What gets put down is the second job and nothing else. You have permission to send one true sentence at nine tomorrow, because 2 Corinthians 12:9 is what makes a true sentence safe, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries whatever it costs to send.

And going still is not the same as giving up. Psalm 46:10 says be still and know that I am God, and that stillness is a command handed to people in the middle of an emergency rather than advice for people with time on their hands, and the Spirit is the one holding the position while you stop. You are not quitting a single thing tonight; you are handing back a job that was never assigned to you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the phone face down. What gets spoken here belongs to you in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is an ambassador repeating what the King has already ruled, not a woman talking herself up on a bad morning. 2 Corinthians 12:9 is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what carries it, and how the mending comes, through which people and at what pace, is His to decide.

  1. Nine o'clock update, you are not my job and you were never the price of being loved. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says the grace is sufficient and the strength is made perfect in weakness, which leaves nothing whatsoever for me to perform. Those eleven people get the true sentence from tomorrow.
  2. Fear that the truth is too heavy for them, get out of my kitchen. In the name of Jesus I put the second job down tonight, and going still is not the same as giving up, because every appointment and every tablet and every Tuesday stays exactly where it is. I hand the weight back to the body that was built to take it.
  3. Father, You were inside Thursday's missing afternoon and none of it had to be drafted for You first. Your word says Your strength is made perfect in weakness, and Your Spirit has been holding the position the whole time I was performing, so the selecting stops here. I am putting the phone face down and telling You the real number tonight.
