He Came In While The House Was Like That

This message is for to be taken out before you have got the house in order, when every instinct in you is to make it presentable first

The knock comes at nine minutes past six, and you are standing in your own kitchen with your hand on the light switch.

You know who it is. You have been half waiting for this and half praying it would not come, and now it has come, and before a single thought forms, your hand is on the switch.

Because the light is on. And with the light on, the kitchen is exactly what it actually is.

The pot has been on the stove since Tuesday. There is bread on the counter that has gone hard enough to knock on. There is a chair whose seat you have not seen since spring, and a bin you have been going to deal with, and a smell you stopped noticing three weeks ago and can suddenly smell again now, at nine minutes past six, standing there with two fingers on a switch.

And it is not really about the kitchen. You know that too.

The kitchen is only the part of it that has a light. Everything else is worse and none of it turns off. What you drank last night. Who you said it to. The eight months. The way you have been speaking to the one person who stayed. The whole of it, sitting there in your house under the ceiling light, and somebody is at the door.

The knock comes again.

So here is the decision you make in about half a second, and you have made it every time before this one. Not tonight. Tomorrow. Give me a week. Give me one clean week and a Saturday, and I will get the pot off the stove and the chair cleared and I will get myself into roughly the shape a man ought to be in before he opens a door like this one, and then I will call, and I will say come, and I will mean it.

You flick the switch. The kitchen goes dark.

You stand very still in your dark kitchen, holding your breath like a boy, and you wait for him to go away.

He does not go away.

He named the day and He named the house

There is a short, strange story in Luke 19 about a small man who climbed a tree to see over a crowd, and the whole of your evening is inside it, though not in the part of it people usually preach.

You are not being waited on. Luke 19:5 has Jesus stop under the branch and say the day out loud, today, before the man in the tree has said one word or promised one thing, and the Holy Spirit did not schedule that visit around a tidy house.

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.Luke 19:5

Watch the sequence, because the whole thing is in the sequence. He does not say: put your affairs in order and then I will come. He does not say: pay back what you took and we will talk about dinner. He says today, and He says your house, and He says it to the one man in that town whose name was the reason the crowd had gathered.

You have the sequence inverted, and nearly everybody does. It is written that He invited Himself in first, and the restitution came later the same evening at the table, and the Spirit of God has never once made a swept floor the price of entry.

Now I have to be careful, because there is a cheap version of this message and it does real damage in the opposite direction. Nobody here is telling you the pot on the stove does not matter.

Zacchaeus stood up at that table and gave half of everything he owned away and paid back four times over what he had taken. The cleaning happened. It happened hard, it happened publicly, and it cost him most of his money. What it did not do was happen first. It was never the entry fee. It was what a rescued man does with his hands once he is out.

You were reached, and the repair is real, and it comes. It is written that salvation came to that house on the day He walked into it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the sorting out afterwards, in an order that works, at a pace that does not break a person.

So come back to your hand on the switch, and understand what the dark is actually for.

The dark is not hiding the room from Him. He named that house from the street. The dark is hiding the room from you, from the version of yourself you would have to stand and look at with the ceiling light on, and that is a different problem and a far older one.

You have nothing left to prepare. Luke 19:5 puts the word today in the mouth of Jesus while the man is still up a tree with no speech ready and no plan at all, and the Holy Spirit is not out on your step waiting for a better kitchen.

And one plain thing, because it belongs in the middle of this rather than in small print. If what is in that house includes thoughts of ending your life, or of just not being here any more, then tonight one living person hears it out loud. A doctor, a friend, the one who stayed. In the United States, call or text 988 and a human being answers. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line will do it. That is not a failure of faith, and it does not make anyone a burden. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience rather than defeat.

The breakthrough

So the light goes back on.

Not tomorrow, not after a clean week, not once the pot is off the stove. Tonight, at nine minutes past six, in the kitchen as it stands, with the smell and the chair and the whole of the eight months.

You are the house He named, and not a house under inspection. Luke 19:5 has Him say today and your house before one single thing in it was put right, and the Holy Spirit is not standing outside waiting on a signal from a man who has been trying to become presentable since the spring.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing under the light, in the room exactly as it is. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so none of this is a man declaring himself respectable: it is written that Jesus named the day and named the house before anything in it had been put right, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes those words land in a kitchen. What gets sorted first, and how long the rest of it takes, is His to decide, and the timing is never a mark against anybody.

  1. Kitchen light, you are on and you are staying on, and this house does not have to be presentable to be entered. Luke 19:5 says He named the day and named the house out loud from the street, and the Spirit of God came in through that gate while the silt was still knee deep.
  2. Shame that reaches for the light switch, get out from behind my hand. This house was named before it was tidy, and I say it in the name of Jesus, who walked in while the pot was still on the stove. The cleaning is real, and the cleaning comes after.
  3. Jesus, You are already inside this house, and Your word says You named the day and named the door before one thing in it was put right. I am turning the light on in the room I was going to leave dark, and Your Spirit is standing in the middle of that floor.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
