You could recite it. That is the strange part.
If somebody stopped you in the street and asked what has to be got right before you would be allowed back, there would be no pause at all. You would give them the list, in order, the way a person gives a phone number.
Stop the thing that has not stopped. Two months clear, minimum, and they have to be two months that did not take a fight, because fighting for it means it is still there. Sort out the business with your brother. Actually mean the apology instead of just saying it. Read something. Stop the other thing, the one nobody knows about, the one that is worse than the first thing. Then, maybe, stand at the back.
You know that list better than you know most of your own family. You have carried it for years. You test yourself against it in the car and at half past one in the morning with the house quiet.
And here is the question that has never once been asked.
Who wrote it?
Go and look for the author. Genuinely, look. Because there is no person to name, no sermon, no verse, no evening when somebody handed it over. It was not read out at a service. It was not printed anywhere. Nobody in your life would recognize it if it were read aloud to them, and two or three of them would be upset.
It is in your own handwriting.
Somewhere back there, on a night that has probably gone from memory, a person who had just done something they could not stand sat down and worked out the terms on which they might one day be acceptable. Then they filed the terms. And then they forgot they were the author.
And ever since, you have been failing an exam that nobody set.
The list is not in His handwriting
Let me get the order right first, because this is where people get hurt in both directions.
There is a version of this message that says nothing needs to change, and it is a lie, and it leaves people precisely where it found them. Things do change. The thing that cannot be stood does get dealt with. Nobody on this page is calling the mess fine.
But the order is fixed, and it does not run the way that list runs. The rescue comes first. The cleaning happens after, and it happens because of the rescue, and never as the price of it.
That order is not a technicality. It is the whole difference between a man in the water being pulled into a boat and a man in the water being handed a form.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.Ephesians 2:8
Read the middle of that. Not of yourselves. The sentence goes out of its way to take the reader out of the source, and it does not do that as an insult. It does it because a gift with a qualifying round in front of it is not a gift, and every person alive knows it.
So the main thing, early. You are eligible tonight in the condition you are actually in, at half past one, with the list still unfinished, because Ephesians 2:8 puts the saving down as a gift and not of yourselves, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at a desk somewhere checking the two months.
Now, where did the list come from? The honest answer is not simple, and it is not cruel either.
Some of it came from a room where somebody explained what people like you have to do first. Some of it came from watching a relative get everything right and never once be thanked for it. And a great deal of it came from one person on one bad night, doing the only thing a decent human being can do with unbearable shame, which is to turn it into a plan.
That plan was mercy in the wrong shape. Romans 5:8 says God showed His love toward us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us, which puts the rescue chronologically in front of every part of the improvement, and the same Spirit who moved then is not waiting on a list now. You were reached in the middle of the thing rather than on the far side of it.
There is a son in Luke 15 who works out a speech on the road home, a careful one, all about being taken on as a hired servant. He never gets to the end of it. Luke 15:20 says the father saw him a long way off and ran, and the running started before a single word of the speech was spoken, and the Spirit of God is not waiting to hear yours either. You have never once needed the speech.
One plain thing here, because it outranks the rest of this page. If the failing has got heavy enough to carry thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here any more, tell one living human being out loud tonight. A friend, your doctor, an emergency line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person answers. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does exactly the same job. That is not a failure of faith, and asking makes nobody a burden. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.
The list has a job, and the job is not holiness. It keeps the shame occupied. Titus 3:5 says He saved us, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that mercy, which leaves the list with nothing to do. You are not being assessed tonight, and the assessment was never on the calendar.
And here is the half that the cheap version always drops. Ephesians 2:10 says we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand, so the changing is real and it is coming and it is His project rather than your entry requirement, and the Spirit is the one who does that work inside a person. You have a Maker who fully intends to finish, and the finishing starts inside the boat.
So the list comes off the wall, and not because it stopped mattering. It comes off because it was never the door. Ephesians 2:8 says the door is a gift, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opened it, and you have been standing outside a door that was never locked, testing yourself in a parked car at half past one.
What is asked tonight is arrival, not readiness. Mark 2:17 has Jesus saying the whole have no need of a physician and the sick do, which makes the exact thing that disqualified you the actual qualification, and the Spirit is the one walking you in. You are welcome in the state you came in from the car, and the mending begins on the inside.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with the paper still in your hand. What gets spoken here belongs to you in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is an ambassador reading back what the King has already ruled. Ephesians 2:8 is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what carries it, and what He changes in you next, and in what order, and at what speed, is His to decide.
- List in my hand, you are not a door and you were never issued by God. Ephesians 2:8 says the saving is a gift and not of myself, so there is nothing written on you for me to finish first. You come off the wall tonight, and the door behind you was never locked.
- Shame that wrote those terms, get off my handwriting. In the name of Jesus I am taken in tonight exactly as I came in from the car, because the father ran while the speech was still out on the road. The mending is His project, and He has already started it.
- Jesus, You never once asked for two clear months and You never set an exam that I could fail. Your word says the saving is a gift and not of myself, and Your Spirit is the one who has been doing the work in me the whole time, so the paper goes on the table now. I am walking in with my hands empty and letting You begin.
