The Plate Came Before The Questions

This message is for to be sat down and fed before anybody asks you to explain where you have been or what you did

You come in through the back door because the back door is quieter, and because you have been rehearsing the front one in the car for the best part of two hours.

It is twenty past one in the morning. The light over the stove is on, which it should not be at this hour, and there is a woman sitting at the kitchen table in a cardigan pulled over her nightdress with a cup of something long gone cold in front of her.

She looks up.

You have the sentence ready. You built it in the car out of about nine drafts, and the final version begins with the words I know and ends with the words if you want me to go. It is a good sentence. It is honest, it does not make excuses, and it names the worst of it in the first eleven words so that nobody has to drag it out of you.

You get as far as I know.

Because she has already stood up. Not fast, not dramatically, just the way a person stands up when the kettle needs doing, and she has opened the oven where a plate has been sitting over a low heat since about nine o'clock, and it is in your hands before you have finished the second word.

Sit down, she says. Not gently and not coldly. The way you would say it to somebody who is standing up in a kitchen at twenty past one in the morning holding a plate.

So you sit down, in your coat, and you eat.

You eat the whole thing, and it takes eleven minutes, and in those eleven minutes she says nothing at all about where you have been. She asks whether there is enough salt. She tells you the boiler made a noise on Tuesday. She gets up once, refills your glass, and sits back down.

And the whole time you are eating you can feel the speech still folded up in your coat pocket, going cold in a different way, and you cannot work out what to do with a mouth that is full and a confession that has nowhere to go.

Nobody asked you a single question.

That, in the end, is the thing that breaks you. Not the shouting you had braced for. The plate.

The order of the evening

The order is not a detail. The order is the entire doctrine.

Luke 15:22 is where it gets settled once and for all, and the Holy Spirit had it written down in a way that leaves the son's rehearsed speech cut off in the middle. The robe went onto a boy who still smelled of somebody else's pigs. You were taken in at the exact hour you turned up and in the exact condition you turned up in.

But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.Luke 15:22

Notice what is missing from that homecoming, because it is missing on purpose. No inspection. No probation. No written statement of what happened to the money. Romans 5:8 says Christ died for us while we were still in the middle of it, and the Spirit of God has never once amended that into a sentence about tidying up first. You have been met before the explaining rather than after it.

And none of this makes the cleaning optional, which is where this teaching usually gets bent out of shape in one direction or the other. The robe went on first and the boy was still washed. He was still fed, still given work, still put back into a household with hours and rules in it. Titus 2:12 has grace itself doing the teaching, and the Holy Spirit does not hand a man a ring and then leave him standing in his own dirt for the rest of his life. You have both halves in your hands tonight: a welcome that asked for nothing, and a cleaning that happened after.

Get the order backwards and the whole thing turns into a fee. Get it right and the fee disappears and the work remains.

One plain paragraph, because a message about coming in at twenty past one in the morning owes somebody this. If part of what got rehearsed in that car is that everybody would be steadier without you in the house at all, say that out loud tonight to one living person, tonight and not next week. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, emergency services, or the crisis line where you live. Saying it is not a failure of faith and it does not make anybody a burden to the person who answers. God puts real rescue into ordinary human hands on purpose, and reaching for those hands is obedience, not defeat.

The plate itself is not a sentimental flourish either. Mark 5:43 has Jesus raise a twelve year old girl from the dead and then immediately tell the room to give her something to eat, and the same Spirit who raised her is the one who thought about supper. You have a God who remembers the food in the middle of a miracle.

So the two hours in the car were never moral seriousness, whatever they felt like from the inside. That was a fee being calculated, and Scripture never sets one. Ephesians 2:8 puts the whole thing beyond the reach of anything a person could produce, and the Holy Spirit was not running an admissions process at that back door. You have spent years waiting to become the sort of person this happens to, and it happens to the ones who come in at twenty past one.

Look again at who moves first in the story. Luke 15:20 has the father running while the boy is still a long way off, which puts the crossing of the distance before the speech was ever delivered, and the Spirit of God has been the one closing that distance in every reconciliation since. You were seen from the road, at range, before a single word of the apology existed.

The breakthrough

So tonight the order goes back the right way round.

The plate first. The questions later, and there will be questions, because Hebrews 12:6 has a Father who trains the children who are actually His, and His Spirit does that work inside the house rather than out on the step in the cold. You are inside first, and everything else that follows happens to somebody who is already in.

Nothing here asks anyone to stay as they came. What it refuses is the idea that the change buys the door. The door was opened from the inside by somebody who was already awake, and 1 John 4:19 puts His loving first in the record permanently, with the Holy Spirit as the one who makes an old sentence land on a man in a coat at a kitchen table. You have been loved in the wrong order, on purpose, and the order is the mercy.

Declare this over yourself

This is not your explanation and it is not your record of the last two years. It belongs to you because you are in Christ, and Luke 15:22 stands in the book because the Holy Spirit wanted the order kept on the page: the robe, then the talking. Speak these with food in front of you, and however He answers everything still waiting outside that door, the door itself was opened from the inside.

  1. Back door, open all the way. His word says the father called for the best robe before the boy could finish his speech, and Luke 15:22 puts a ring on a hand that still had the far country all over it.
  2. Entry fee, get off my doorstep in the name of Jesus. The plate came before the questions, and the man eating it is a son at his own table at twenty past one in the morning.
  3. Father, You were already running while the speech was still being drafted in a parked car, and Your word never once asked for the speech at all. I am sitting down to eat before I explain a single thing, and Your Spirit is the one who put the plate into my hands.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
