The call comes at ten past nine and you take it standing at the sink with the water still running.
It is the friend whose marriage has been quietly coming apart for two years, and he does not want you to say it. He wants the soft thing, the thing about seasons. You dry your hand on the towel and you say it anyway, because you always do. You tell him the true thing, gently, in eleven words, and then you stay on the line for forty minutes while he cries.
That is your gift and everybody knows it. You are the one who names it. You can walk into a room where six people are being polite about something that is on fire, and you can put a word on it so exactly that the whole room breathes out. Your brother calls you before he calls anyone. Two people at work have your number for that reason and no other. Somebody at church once told you that you have a surgeon's hands for it, and you laughed, and you have thought about that every week since.
Then you hang up. You put the phone face down on the counter. You finish the dishes.
And there is a sentence about your own life that you have never once started.
Not to your wife. Not to the friend who just cried on you for forty minutes. Not out loud in a parked car by yourself with the engine off, which is where a man says most of his true things. You have got close. You have got as far as opening your mouth in a dark parking lot and hearing how the first four words would sound, and deciding, again, that tonight is not the night.
Because here is the arithmetic you have run a thousand times. If the man who names things has a thing he has never named, then the naming was never the gift. It was the cover.
So you carry a depth that nobody has a word for, and that includes you.
And it is further down than any of them realize. Further down than your wife thinks. Further down than the version you would hand a counselor if you ever sat in the chair. There is what you have admitted, and there is where you actually are, and between those two there is a distance nobody has ever measured. You have started to suspect that nothing reaches that far.
Down to the roots of the mountains
I want to start where the record starts, because the record is not squeamish about depth, and almost everybody who loves you is.
Jonah 2:6 has a man at the roots of the mountains with the bars of the earth shut behind him. You are further in than the people trying to help you have been told, and I am not guessing at that. It is written into the middle of a prayer God kept on the record instead of tidying, and the Holy Spirit did not edit the depth down to something more presentable before He put it in the book.
I went down to the roots of the mountains. The earth with her bars closed behind me forever. Yet You brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God.Jonah 2:6
Read the two halves of that against each other. The first half is a man describing a floor with no exit. The second half is the same man's mouth, in the same breath, telling God what God did. Nothing in between. No improvement. No better account of the situation.
And notice who got the summary. Jonah handed the sailors his version on the deck: four facts and a job title, I am a Hebrew, I fear the God of heaven. It was accurate and it was nothing like the whole of it, and that summary is what everybody who has ever loved you has been working from too.
You have been reached at the actual depth rather than the reported one, and Scripture is where that is settled rather than in my opinion of you. The Spirit of God is in the room reading it over you right now, at the counter, with the phone still face down where you left it.
The gift was never the reach
There is a reason the gift and the silence live in the same man, and it is not hypocrisy. What you carry for other people is real. Somebody breathed out tonight because a man had words when nobody else did, and that was not a trick.
But look at what the gift quietly taught you. If words are how a thing gets reached, then a thing with no words must be out of reach. That is the arithmetic. It is wrong at the root, and the whole of your exhaustion is built on it.
You have been known at that depth since long before there was a word for any of it. Psalm 139:1 says God searched a man and knew him, and the same Spirit who did that searching has never once waited on your summary of the findings.
One plain thing here, and it is not a footnote. If what sits under the unnamed sentence is the thought of ending your life, then the naming has to happen tonight and it cannot happen to a page. In the United States, call or text 988 and a human being answers. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line, and if the number is not in your head, say exactly that to whoever picks up and let them find it. Tell one living person in your house or on your phone before you sleep. That is not a failure of faith and it does not make you a burden to a single person who loves you. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for a hand is obedience, not defeat.
Here is the turn, and it is the thing the arithmetic was built to avoid. The naming was never the gift. The reach was. You were held at the roots of the mountains long before there was language for any of it, and Jonah 2:6 sits on the record precisely so that a man with no words of his own could find it later, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it in front of you tonight.
So stop hunting for the sentence first.
The order has been the wrong way round for years. The project has been to become articulate enough about the depth to qualify for somebody reaching it, and the record has it the other way: the reaching came down to a man who had already run out of speech and had bars shut behind him.
You have already been met at the depth that still has no name, and that is not a feeling for anybody to work up. His word puts God at the roots of the mountains ahead of the man who went down there, and the Holy Spirit is holding that open in front of you at this exact hour of the night.
And now say something. Not the whole sentence. Not a good version of it. The first four words of it, out loud, to God, badly.
You are reachable at a depth you could not describe if somebody paid you, and Scripture never once makes the reach conditional on the quality of the report. The Spirit of God is not standing at the edge of it holding a form to be completed.
I am not putting a date on what comes after that, and neither should anybody else. What I am telling you is the shape of it. He goes down. He gets underneath. He brings up. When and how are His, and they always were.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with your hand still on your chest. The reach is already yours in Christ and it is not waiting on better wording for the depth, because Jonah 2:6 was written by a man who had gone past words entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding this open while you speak. When the change comes and what it looks like is His timing, and the waiting has never once been a verdict on you.
- Depth I have never said out loud, hear your limit. Jonah 2:6 puts a man at the roots of the mountains with the bars of the earth shut behind him, and God brought his life up out of the pit. There is no floor under me that His arm has not already reached past.
- Verdict that the naming was only cover, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. The true thing I say for everybody else is a true thing God is saying over me in the same breath, and the gift He gave me was never a lid on my own life.
- Lord, You went down to the roots of the mountains after a man who could not get the words out either, and You have already reached the depth I have never named. I am saying the first four words to You tonight and then to one living person, and Your word and Your Spirit are what I am standing on while I say them.
