The Second RescuePsalm 145:14

The Same People Sat Up Again

This message is for to ask again in front of the very people who sat up with you all night the first time

The kettle goes on at twenty to three in the morning and you know the sound of it before it starts.

You are on the second stair from the bottom, in the dark, where you have been sitting for about forty minutes, and from there you can see a strip of the kitchen: the corner of the table, one chair, and your cousin's forearm reaching across for the tin of teabags on the shelf where the tin has always been.

Your aunt is with him. You cannot see her but you can hear the particular way she sets a cup down, which is the same way she set a cup down six years ago in this kitchen at roughly this hour.

Six years ago they drove four hours. They took turns. One of them slept in the chair by the window and one of them sat awake, and in the morning your aunt made eggs for nine people and told everybody it was nothing.

You promised yourself, not out loud but in a way that felt binding, that they would never do that again.

And now the kettle is on, and it is the same kettle, and the tin is on the same shelf, and the strip of light coming out of that kitchen door onto the hall floor is exactly the shape it was the last time, and the shape of it is unbearable.

You could go back up. You have thought about it. You could go back up and be found in the morning and let the finding do the asking for you, because being found is passive and asking is not.

Because here is the arithmetic on the second stair. The falling is bad. The falling is bad and you know how to survive being the man who fell.

What you do not know how to survive is walking into that kitchen and saying the words out loud to two people who already gave you a night of their lives once and put it in a drawer and never mentioned it again.

The kettle clicks off.

Somebody sets out a second cup. Then, after a pause, a third.

What actually costs, the second time

The fall is not the expensive part. Everybody assumes it is, including the person on the stair.

The expensive part is the sentence. Six words, most of the time. Nine at the outside. And a man who came through the first one with his dignity mostly intact will sit in the dark for forty minutes rather than spend them.

Psalm 145:14 was written with one word in it that does the entire job, and the word is all. The Holy Spirit did not have it recorded as the Lord upholds the ones who fall once, and the falling in that sentence sits in the present tense, ongoing, happening while it is being read. You are standing inside the word all tonight, on the second stair, listening to a kettle.

The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.Psalm 145:14

Look at where the cost actually lands, because it is not on the fall. Hebrews 4:16 opens the throne of grace to a person coming boldly at the time of need, and the Spirit of God attached no clause to that about which visit this happens to be. You have been carrying a shame that belongs to the asking rather than to the falling, and it was never issued to you in the first place.

Nobody in that kitchen is keeping a tally, and heaven is not running one either. Psalm 103:14 says He knows what we are made of and remembers that we are dust, and the Holy Spirit has never once turned that knowledge around and used it as evidence against somebody. You have not spent anything down.

One plain paragraph, put here on purpose rather than at the end. If the reason for the forty minutes on that stair includes any thought of ending your life or of quietly not being here, say it tonight, out loud, to one living human being. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, emergency services, or the crisis line for where you live. That is not a failure of faith and it does not make anybody a burden to whoever answers the phone. God puts real rescue into the hands of people with kettles and cars and telephone numbers on purpose, and using them is obedience rather than defeat.

Notice what the two of them did with that kettle. They did not hold a meeting about whether it was reasonable to do this a second time. 1 Corinthians 13:7 puts love in the category of the thing that bears all things and endures, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps ordinary relatives sitting up at three in the morning for somebody they already sat up for once. You were sent those two, twice, and neither time was a coincidence.

There is a lie in this house tonight that says the second rescue is a lesser sort of thing. A repair under warranty. A tidy up rather than a rescue. Psalm 145:14 has God raising the bowed down without once grading how they came to be bowed, and His Spirit does the lifting with the same hands both times. You were raised the first time and you are being raised now by the identical strength, and the second one is not a smaller word.

And the weight sitting in your chest since about nine o'clock this evening is not conviction, whatever it is impersonating. Romans 8:1 leaves no condemnation standing over anyone who is in Christ, and the Holy Spirit convicts a person about a thing rather than about their existence. You have been carrying an accusation dressed up in the clothes of humility.

The breakthrough

So the sentence in your head changes tonight.

Here we go again is not the sentence that is written down anywhere. Psalm 145:14 uses the present tense for the falling, and the Spirit of God is not weary of that verb. You are being upheld while you are still going down, and both of those are true in the same moment, which is exactly what makes it a rescue and not a reward.

Then go and say it to the two of them, out loud, in the kitchen, tonight. James 5:16 has believers telling one another the truth and praying for one another, and the Holy Spirit put that instruction in the plural on purpose, because it was never designed to be done alone. You have permission that you did not think you had any more, and none of it expired while you were upstairs.

Declare this over yourself

This is not your track record and it is not your nerve at a kitchen counter. It belongs to you because you are in Christ, and Psalm 145:14 stands in the book because the Holy Spirit meant the word all to be read by somebody on a second stair at three in the morning. Speak these while the kettle is on, and however He answers everything that comes after tonight, the upholding is already underway.

  1. Kitchen, quiet down. His word says the Lord upholds all who fall and raises up all who are bowed down, and Psalm 145:14 puts the word all in front of a second night as squarely as it put it in front of the first.
  2. Used Up, get out of my chest in the name of Jesus. Nobody in this house kept a count and heaven never opened a ledger, and the man asking again tonight is asking with permission that never once expired.
  3. Lord, You are holding a man up while he is still on the way down, and Your word raises all who are bowed rather than the ones on their first fall. I am taking two cups down tonight and saying it out loud to the people who sat up before, and Your Spirit is the one walking me to that counter.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
