You are standing at the kitchen sink with your sleeve pushed up past the elbow, watching the base of your thumb.
There is a scar across it, white and slightly raised, from a fishing knife and a wet handle and a stupid afternoon a long time ago. It is an old scar. It has been an old scar for years. And tonight, after four hours of work in the cold with a wire brush, it has opened along its own line, exactly its own line, not a millimeter off it, and the blood is coming up in that thin neat way that only happens when a thing splits where it split before.
You stand there and you look at it for longer than a cut deserves.
Because here is what you cannot do. You cannot go into the front room and tell them you cut your hand. That is not what happened. Nobody would look twice at a new cut, and someone would find the box, and it would be over in three minutes and nobody would think about it again.
But it is not a new cut. It is the old one. And the second you say the words it is the old one, you have said something about yourself that a new cut would not have said, and you know exactly how it will land, and you know exactly which face in that room will do the small thing with the eyes.
So you run the cold tap. You hold your hand under it for a long time. You get the box down yourself, quietly, and you use one from the same box you used the first time, because there is still most of a box left, because that is how few you needed.
And you go back into the front room with your sleeve down.
That is the hand. You know that this page is not really about the hand.
There is a thing in your life that split along its own old line about three weeks ago. You got out of it once. Somebody helped, and it cost them, and you were so grateful you could hardly speak, and you told people. And it is back, in the same place, in the same shape, and it did not even have the decency to be a different problem.
You would ask for help tonight if you could call it something new.
The name they gave her and the name He gave back
Jeremiah is writing to people in the second collapse. Not the first one. They had already had a rescue in their history, and a song about it, and children who had grown up on the story, and now the walls are down again and the whole thing has a horribly familiar shape.
And into that, this.
For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.Jeremiah 30:17
Read the reason He gives, because it is the part almost nobody notices and it is the whole verse. You are answered at the level of the name rather than at the level of the record, and that is written into the middle of Jeremiah 30:17 where anybody can see it, and the Holy Spirit has never once let that clause be quietly dropped.
He does not say I will heal you because the suffering has gone on long enough, and He does not say because the lesson has finally landed. He says because they called thee an Outcast. The reason for the healing is the name that got put on her while she lay there the second time. God heard the name and answered the name, and the answer to the name was health.
You have a name on you tonight that other people put there, or that you put there yourself in a kitchen with the cold tap running, and Jeremiah 30:17 is the direct answer to that name rather than to your record. The Holy Spirit is the one who kept that clause in the verse instead of leaving it on the cutting room floor, and He did not keep it there for a stranger.
Why the second time costs more to say
Let me name the thing precisely, because a thing named loosely stays.
The first rescue was not humiliating. It was hard and it was frightening and it was many things, but there was a kind of dignity available in it, because it was a crisis and crises happen to people. There was a story shape to it. There was a before and an after.
The second one has no story shape at all. The second one has a shape people already know the ending of, and that is a completely different thing to carry into a room.
So the wound gets renamed on the way in. It gets called stress, or a bad patch, or a busy few months. It is not lying exactly, it is more like translating, and everybody does it, and the cost of it is that the thing that actually needs the arm never gets the arm, because the thing that walked into the room was a smaller thing wearing its coat.
You were never asked to invent a new name for it in order to qualify for help, and His word does not put that condition anywhere near a wound. The same Spirit who moved on Jeremiah to write down the exact reason for the healing is not going to be thrown by hearing the true name of what opened again.
And here is what I will not do, and I want to be plain about it. I will not tell you how many times you get. Nobody who actually knows God counts on His behalf, and the moment a number goes on it, the whole thing becomes a ledger and God becomes an accountant, and He is not one. There is no figure. There is no remaining balance. That question is not being asked of you anywhere in this.
One plain thing, and it needs to go in straight. If what has opened along the old line is not a hand and not a habit but the thought of ending your life, and if this is not the first time that thought has been in the room either, then it goes to a human being tonight and not into a sink. In the United States, call or text 988 and somebody answers, at any hour, including this one. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line, and if you cannot bring the number to mind, say that to whoever picks up and let them do the finding. Then tell one living person in your house or on your phone before you sleep. That is not a failure of faith and it does not make you anybody's burden, least of all a second time. God put real rescue into human hands on purpose, and the second call is exactly as legitimate as the first.
You have not used anything up, and that is not me being kind to you, it is what Jeremiah 30:17 is doing in a book written to people on their second collapse, and the Spirit of God is reading it over a kitchen and a cold tap tonight.
So call it what it is. Out loud. Once.
Not as a confession that requires an audience, and not as a report you have to defend. Just the true name of the true thing, said once in your own voice so that it stops being unsayable. It is the same one. That is the whole sentence.
You have permission for that sentence already and it is not mine to give, because Jeremiah 30:17 hands health to a place that people were still calling Outcast, and the Spirit of God is the one steadying your mouth while the true name comes out of it.
And notice what that sentence is not. It is not a verdict. A verdict is a judgment about the person; that sentence is a description of a wound, and the two have been welded together for so long that saying the second one out loud always drags the first one in behind it.
You have been carrying a description as though it were a sentence passed on you, and Scripture pulls those two apart in one line: the name they gave her was Outcast, and the name God gave back was health, and the same Spirit who put that exchange on the record is putting it in front of you now.
And I am not going to put a date on the mending, because that is His and I would not know. What I can tell you is what the verse actually does. He hears the name. He answers the name. He does not ask how the wound got open the second time before He starts.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with your hand still under the water. What God restores is given to you outright and it was never issued against a tally, because Jeremiah 30:17 is written to a people who had already been written off once, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding it open in front of you tonight. Whatever He does with this second time and however He answers it is His, and coming back has never once been evidence against you.
- Old line that has opened again, hear the name God uses. Jeremiah 30:17 has the LORD saying I will restore health unto thee and I will heal thee of thy wounds, and He said it over a place that everybody else had already written off. The same wound gets the same God, and He has not moved an inch.
- Shame of asking twice, loose your grip on my mouth in the name of Jesus. God heard the name they gave that city and answered it with health, and what He restores He has never once itemized.
- Lord, You called a ruined city by a name nobody else would use, and You are using Your own name for me tonight over the same wound I brought before. I am holding my hand under the water and saying out loud that it is the same one, and Your word and Your Spirit are what I am standing on while I say it.
