The Second RescueProverbs 24:16

The Road I Swore Off

This message is for to be found on a road you swore to God out loud that you would never be on again

You knew the turning before the headlights found the sign.

That is the part you will think about later. Not the drive out, not the reasons, not the hour of the afternoon when the whole thing quietly got decided. The turning. Your hands took it without asking you, the way hands do a thing they have done four hundred times, and the truck came off the road at exactly the speed it always came off the road.

The sign still has the dead letter in it. Third one along. Nobody has fixed it in six years.

And there is the lot, and there is the dip in the asphalt where the water sits after rain, and there is the space, third from the end, where you always park because it is out of the light and you can see the door from it.

You do not get out straight away. You sit.

And it is very quiet in a truck.

Because you know what you said. You know exactly what you said, and when, and where you were sitting, and what your hands were doing while you said it. It was April. It was in this seat. Both hands on the wheel at ten and two like a man taking an oath, which is what it was.

Never again. Out loud. To God, by name, in your own voice, with tears on your face that you were not ashamed of at the time.

And now it is October, and the engine is off, and you are in the same space.

Here is the thing nobody outside a truck like this understands. The trouble in front of you is not the worst of it. You have handled the trouble before; the trouble is almost familiar, and familiar is survivable.

It is the promise. It is having said it out loud. It is that you took the one thing you had left, your word to God, and you spent it in April, and now you are sitting here with nothing to bring and nothing to say and no way to explain yourself that does not sound like every other time.

So you do the only arithmetic left. You work out that you cannot ask again. Not for this. Not after that April.

You reach for the door handle, or you reach for the key.

And either way, you have already decided the one thing that is not true.

What actually keeps a man in that lot

You are sitting in the shame of the repeat, and that is a different weight from the fall itself. Proverbs 24:16 says a just man falls and gets up, and the Holy Spirit is in the cab with you right now reading that line over a space you have parked in twice.

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.Proverbs 24:16

Now be careful with that verse, because a tired man will read it as an allowance and start counting. It is not a budget. Nobody in that sentence is being handed a quota with six left on it. It is a portrait, and the whole point of the portrait is that the defining feature of a righteous man is not that he stays upright. It is that he keeps getting up, and that God keeps calling him just while he is on his way up.

Look at what the verse does not say. It does not say a just man falls once and then never again. It does not say a man who falls twice has been reclassified. His word puts the falling and the rising in the same sentence about the same man on purpose, and the Spirit of God has been holding that sentence out to you since you turned the engine off.

The shame is the thing keeping you in the lot, and shame is not conviction. They feel similar in a dark truck and they do opposite work. Conviction names a thing and turns a man toward the One who deals with it. Shame names the man himself and turns him away, and it always, always sounds reasonable while it is doing it.

Hear this while the engine is still ticking. You are not further from God in October than in April, and that is not a sentiment offered to soften the drive home. Proverbs 24:16 refuses to change the man's name between the falling and the rising, and the Spirit of God has not changed His posture toward you between one month and the other.

Listen to the argument shame has been making in that cab. It says: never again was the word, so there is no standing left to ask from. It says: the word got spent in April, so the asking got spent with it.

That argument has a hidden claim inside it, and the claim is that God's willingness to come out was purchased in April by the strength of your promise. It was not. It never was. You are not held by the quality of what you undertook, and it is written all through Scripture that mercy runs on His own character rather than on the reliability of whoever is asking, and the Spirit of God is not standing in this lot checking whether April held.

And one plain thing, straight out, because it outranks the rest of this page. If sitting in that lot has taken you as far as thinking about ending your life, or about just not going home, tell one living human being tonight. Out loud, before you sleep. A friend, a doctor, a crisis line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person picks up. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does the same work. Needing that is not a failure of faith, and nobody who reaches for it is a burden. God put real rescue into human hands deliberately, and taking hold of one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

The breakthrough

So we are not going to fix April.

You cannot go back and be a man who kept his word, and no amount of sitting in that space is going to change what got said. That road is closed and it was always closed, and the reason you keep reaching for it is that it looks like the only honorable option left.

There is another road out of that lot, and it is open at exactly this hour, in that seat, in the condition a man is actually in.

Ask again.

Not better. Not with a stronger promise attached, because a stronger promise is precisely what got spent last time. Just ask, out loud, in the same voice you used in April, from the same seat, and let it be short.

You have not been reclassified by October. Proverbs 24:16 keeps calling the man just while he is still on the ground, and the Spirit of God is the reason there are words in your mouth right now instead of a key in the ignition.

It is already settled on His side, which is the only side that decides anything: Proverbs 24:16 has a just man on the ground and calls him just while he is down there, and the Spirit of God is not waiting for you to arrive with a better guarantee before He counts what you say.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a man trying to get a hearing back. It belongs to you because Proverbs 24:16 says the just man rises and God calls him just on the way up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old line stand up and speak in a truck at the end of a bad October. How He answers, and how fast, and what tomorrow morning looks like from here, is His to decide, and you leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Third space from the end, you are not a courtroom, and there was never a verdict in you. Proverbs 24:16 says a just man falls and rises again, and the Spirit of God is on this asphalt at this hour with a man who has parked here twice. This is a place somebody comes and gets me from, and it has never once been anything else.
  2. Used up, get out of my mouth and off the count of my life. I am a man God comes back for, and I say it in the name of Jesus, who has never once kept a tally against a son on his way up off the ground. What fills the room where that word was sitting is a mercy that nobody is measuring.
  3. Lord, I said it out loud in April and I am in the same space in October, and I am not hiding that from You. Your word says the just man rises, and Your Spirit is the reason I am talking instead of driving home quiet. I am asking You again, out loud, from the same seat.
