Carried OutPsalm 126:1

Out And Not Feeling It Yet

This message is for to be genuinely out and have no feeling about it yet, and not to manufacture one for anybody

Somebody has bought a cake.

It is on the table in the break room with a knife beside it and a card that everybody has signed, and eleven people are standing in a semicircle waiting for you to react.

And you cannot find it.

You can see that this is the good day. There is no confusion. You know exactly what has happened, and what it cost, and how many people prayed, and that a year ago you would have described this precise afternoon as the thing you wanted most in the world.

And here you stand in the middle of it, holding a paper plate, feeling roughly what a person feels about a bus timetable.

Somebody says the thing. We are so proud of you. And the room does the noise, and you do the face, because there is a face for this and it has been in service about three weeks now. It works. Nobody has spotted it.

Then a woman you actually like says, you must be over the moon.

And there is half a second where telling the truth is genuinely on the table, and then you hear yourself say, I really am, and it is the first outright lie you have told any of them.

You get through the cake. You get to the car. And in the parking lot you sit with both hands in your lap and go looking, properly looking, the way a person searches a coat for keys.

There is nothing there.

Not sadness. Sadness would at least be something. Not doubt either. Just a flat, quiet, wide open nothing where the feeling was supposed to be, and eleven people in a break room who are going to ask again on Monday.

And underneath it, arriving quietly, the worst thought of the whole afternoon.

Maybe it did not take.

Because surely, if it had, something in there would know.

Out is a fact before it is a feeling

First, plainly, because it is the thing that got you this far down the page: the flatness is not evidence.

It is not evidence that it failed to take. It is not evidence of ingratitude. It is not evidence of anything at all, except that a nervous system braced for a long time does not unbrace on a schedule that suits a break room.

There is a psalm written by people walking out of captivity, and the first line is not the line anybody expects.

When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.Psalm 126:1

Like them that dream. Not like them that celebrate. The rescue is complete, the gates are behind them, the thing an entire generation asked for has actually happened, and the word they reach for is dreaming, which is the word a person uses when the facts have arrived and the inside has not caught up with them.

So take the main thing early. You are genuinely out, and the flatness is not a ruling on it, because Psalm 126:1 puts a whole rescued nation in exactly this condition and calls it dreaming rather than failure, and the Holy Spirit is not standing in the parking lot waiting for you to produce a feeling.

And it happens to the most solid people in the book. Acts 12:9 says Peter walked out through the gate behind an angel and did not know that it was real, and thought he was seeing a vision, and the same Spirit who ran that entire rescue did not call it off because the man being rescued could not feel it happening. You were carried out through a gate whether or not anything inside registered the walking.

Then Acts 12:11 says he came to himself, and only then said, now I know for certain. The knowing came second. It arrived in a street, later, on his own, and the Spirit of God did not hurry it along. You have nothing to manufacture tonight, and there is no schedule that you are behind.

One plain thing right here, because it matters more than anything else on this page, and because the after is exactly where people go back in. If the flatness has thoughts in it about ending your life, or about simply not being here any more, tell one living human being out loud tonight, today, before Monday. A friend, your doctor, an emergency line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person answers. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does exactly the same job. That is not a failure of faith, and it does not undo one thing that has happened, and saying it makes nobody a burden. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

There is a man in John 11 who comes out of a tomb still wrapped in the cloths he was buried in, and the first thing spoken over him is: loose him, and let him go. Out came first. The unwrapping came second, and by other hands. You are out and still bound in places, both at once, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the unwrapping and He never hands anybody their own knots.

Now the break room, because Monday really is coming. Nobody standing at that table is owed a performance. Isaiah 40:11 says He gently leads those that are with young, and gentle is the pace this is set at, and the Spirit is not asking anybody to match the timing of a room with a cake in it. You have permission to say the true sentence out loud: I am out, and I have not felt it yet.

And the restoring is somebody's job, and it is not yours. Psalm 23:3 says He restores the soul, and Mark 6:31 has Jesus telling worn out people to come apart into a quiet place and rest a while, which is an instruction rather than a reward, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying out both. You were rescued by somebody who fully intends to do the rest of it as well.

The breakthrough

So nothing gets manufactured tonight. Not for the eleven people, not for the woman who asked, and least of all for God, who has never once needed a performance out of anybody. Psalm 126:1 says the rescued came out feeling like dreamers, and the Holy Spirit withholds nothing from a person telling the truth about being blank. You are out, and out is a fact, and a fact does not go to the feelings for confirmation.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing at the window. What gets spoken here belongs to you in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is an ambassador repeating what the King has already ruled, not a woman talking herself into a mood. Psalm 126:1 is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what carries it, and when the feeling arrives, and how, and through which ordinary Tuesday, is His to decide.

  1. Flat afternoon in a break room, you are not a verdict and you were never proof that it did not take. Psalm 126:1 puts a whole rescued nation in this exact condition and calls it dreaming. Out is a fact, and the fact holds with or without me feeling it.
  2. Fear that says it did not take, get out of this car. In the name of Jesus I am out through a gate I never opened, the same as a man who walked past guards and thought he was seeing a vision. The unwrapping belongs to Him, and He has started it.
  3. Lord, You brought me out while I could not feel one inch of it, and You have never once asked me for a face. Your word says the rescued walked out like people dreaming, and Your Spirit is doing the restoring at Your pace and not the break room's, so there is nothing to manufacture for Monday. I am standing at this window telling You the true sentence instead.
