The Arm ReachedPsalm 107:20

Somebody Stopped On That Road

This message is for to name the one who stopped on a road where nobody stops as sent, rather than as fortunate

Route 9, the second week of November, ten miles out past the quarry with nothing on either side but fence posts and stubble.

Your truck quit about a mile back and you got it onto the shoulder before it died the rest of the way. The hazard lights are going. The cold is coming up through the floor of the cab the way it does when an engine stops making its own heat, and your phone says four percent and no bars, and it has said that for twenty minutes.

So you get out. You stand in front of the hood with it propped up, because that is what a person does, and the wind coming off the field goes straight through the jacket you grabbed on the way out because it was the one hanging by the door.

Headlights.

You lift your hand.

They go past. Not fast, not rude, nothing you could be angry about. They just go past, the way you have gone past, the way anybody goes past at nine at night in November on a road with no shoulder to speak of.

Second set. Same thing.

Third set slows, which is worse, because for about four seconds you believe it. Then it does not stop either, and the taillights get small and orange and then they are gone, and you stand in the dark listening to your own engine tick while it cools.

And something closes. Quietly. It is not anger; you would almost prefer anger. It is arithmetic. Three out of three. This is how it goes, this is how it has always gone, and a grown man ought to know better than to stand out here with his hand in the air.

So you get back in the cab and pull the door shut and sit there with your hands in your armpits.

You do not put your hand up for the fourth one.

Which is why you never see it slow down.

You hear it instead. Gravel under tires. A diesel dropping off. Then lights swinging in behind you and staying there, and a door, and boots on the gravel, and a man coming up the shoulder with a flashlight pointed down at the ground so it will not blind you, saying something you cannot make out yet through the glass.

He did not have to. Nobody stops out there. You had just finished proving it three times.

He stopped.

Who owns the verb in that sentence

There is one word that has been doing all the work since that night, and it is the wrong word.

Lucky.

You were not lucky on that road. Psalm 107:20 says He sent his word, and healed, and delivered, and the whole sentence turns on that first verb, and the Holy Spirit is in the room with you right now reading it over a night you filed under coincidence years ago.

He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.Psalm 107:20

Read it slowly, because the grammar is the theology. He sent. Not it happened. Not the odds finally broke the right way. A Sender, an act of sending, and a rescue arriving at a specific place at a specific hour because Somebody put it on the road.

Luck is a word with nobody inside it. That is its whole problem. It takes a thing that was aimed and files it under weather, and then there is no one to thank and no one to expect anything from, and the best night of a man's life becomes a statistic he was on the right side of once. You have been thanking nobody for years, and it is written in that psalm that the delivering had a Sender, and the Spirit of God has been quietly working the lid off that file ever since.

Now the other half, and it costs more to hear than the luck did.

Nothing on that road came out of your own strength either. The sitting down had already happened. The hand had already gone down, and the truck came anyway, and if we are honest that is the detail a man skips when he tells it. His word puts every verb on God's side of the line, He sent, He healed, He delivered, and the Spirit is not standing here asking anybody to go and locate some grit that was never in the account. The arm reached. You were reached. That is the whole grammar of it, and there is no version where the rescued man gets to be the subject.

Look at who is standing near you this month. The neighbor who knocked at a strange hour. The woman at work who said one sentence that landed like it had your name on it. The cousin who called on that particular evening. Some of those you are calling a coincidence too, and Psalm 107:20 has a Sender in it, and the Holy Spirit is still doing the sending, still today, still in ordinary trucks driven by ordinary men who could easily have kept going.

And one plain thing, straight out, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If the dark right now includes thoughts of ending your life or of not being here any more, tell one living human being tonight, out loud. A friend, a doctor, a crisis line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a person will answer. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line will do the same. That is not a failure of faith and it is not being a burden to anybody. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is one word wide.

Feeling something is not the entry requirement. Neither is reconstructing the night, or working out which truck it was, or finding the man to thank him, though if he can be found he should be.

The naming is already settled on God's side, and the only part left is a mouth. It is already finished in Psalm 107:20, which does not hedge for a second about who sent what, and the Spirit of God is not waiting on better wording from anybody before He counts it.

Take the word luck off that night and put the word sent in its place.

That is the breakthrough. It sounds small until it is done out loud, and then a man finds out that a rescue with a Sender in it changes what he expects from tomorrow, because a Sender who came down Route 9 in November is a Sender who is still on the road.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a man talking himself into a better memory of a cold night. It belongs to you because Psalm 107:20 says the delivering had a Sender, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line stand up and speak in a man's own mouth. How He sends the next one, through which door and which person and at what hour, is His to decide, and you leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Route 9, you are not the author of what happened on you, and neither was the weather. Psalm 107:20 says He sent his word and delivered, and the Spirit of God carried that sending down the same dark I was standing in. There was a Sender that night, and He is the one on the road I am on now.
  2. Fluke, get out of my mouth and get off the best night of my life. I am an aimed-at man, and I say it in the name of Jesus, who sends and who stops and who has never once pulled over by mistake. The room where that word lived is full now, and what fills it is a Sender with a name.
  3. Lord, You stopped on a road where nobody stops, and I am done calling it fortunate. Your word says You sent and You delivered, and Your Spirit is the one putting the true word in my mouth tonight. I am saying sent out loud with my hand up, and I am watching for the next one You send.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
