The Arm ReachedRevelation 3:8

The Door That Shut On Purpose

This message is for to name the closed door you resented at the time as the arm that pulled you back from something

You still remember what you were wearing.

You remember which bus you took, and the way the revolving door felt heavier than a door should feel, and the woman at reception who said your name back to you as though she already knew it. You remember thinking, on the way up, that you had never in your life wanted anything this specific before.

And you remember the email. Four days later, twenty past four on a Thursday, in a parking lot, on your phone, with the engine off.

We regret. We had an exceptional field. We will keep you on file.

You sat there until the windows fogged. You had already worked out the commute. You had already told two people. You had already stood in a store looking at a coat you were going to buy with the first month of it, and you had already, quietly, in the part of a person that does not say things out loud, decided that this was the thing that was finally going to make the last three years make sense.

You prayed about it. That is the part that sat worst. You prayed a specific prayer with a specific name in it, and what came back was a form email with your surname spelled wrong.

So you filed it. It went under the heading of things God did not do for you, in with the rest of them, and the file got heavier that year. And for a long time afterward, whenever you drove past that building, you would look up at the third floor without ever deciding to.

Then last spring somebody told you something across a table, with no idea what they were telling you.

They told you what that department was actually like. Who ran it. What happened to the three people who took the job you applied for, one after another, before anybody upstairs would look at it. They told it as gossip, mildly, the way people tell things that did not happen to them. And you sat there holding a fork and could not make your hand move.

Because the door did not fail to open.

The door was being held shut.

Doors have hands on them

Let me be careful straight away, because there is a cheap version of this and it does real damage. The cheap version says every closed door is secretly a gift, and it gets said to people standing in actual wreckage, and it is not true, and it is cruel. Some doors close and the closing is simply grief, and nothing in this message is going to be laid over the top of that.

This is about one door. Yours. The one on the third floor, and what somebody let slip four years too late.

There is a letter in Revelation written to a small congregation with almost nothing going for it, and before it says a word about them it describes the One speaking in terms of what He does with doors.

I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.Revelation 3:8

The line just before that names Him as the One holding the key of David, who opens and no man shuts, and shuts and no man opens. Read that part twice, because most people only ever quote the first half of it. The opening is His. The shutting is His too. Same hand, same key, same intention, and not two different moods.

So take the main thing early, before the teaching has even got going. You were moved that Thursday afternoon, not passed over, and Revelation 3:7 puts the key in the hand of the One who shuts as deliberately as He opens, and the Holy Spirit was not a bystander in a parking lot with the windows fogging up.

I know what that does to a person, and I would rather say it than make you say it. It makes you angry in a direction you cannot aim. Because if the door was held, then the crying in the car was still real, and the coat still did not get bought, and knowing it now hands back not one minute of that Thursday.

Both of those stand. Nobody is asking for the grief back.

Here is the grammar, though, and the whole of this rests in the grammar. You were the one reached, not the one who read the situation correctly at the time. Acts 16:6 has a group of seasoned men trying to go somewhere entirely sensible and being forbidden by the Holy Spirit to go there, and not one of them saw it coming, and not one of them was clever about it.

They found out later. Everybody finds out later. That is not a defect in them and it is not a defect in the reader of this page: it is simply what it means to be the one being rescued rather than the one running the rescue.

And the prayer with the name in it was answered. Not with the thing that was asked for, which is the hard half and I am not going to soften it. But Psalm 37:23 says the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and the Spirit of God orders steps by closing streets at least as often as by opening them. You have an answered prayer sitting in your own history, filed under silence.

One plain thing here in the middle, because it outranks everything else on this page. If that file of things God did not do has got heavy enough to carry thoughts of ending your life, or of simply not being here any more, tell one living human being out loud tonight. A friend, your doctor, an emergency line. In the United States, call or text 988 and a real person picks up. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line does exactly the same job. That is not a failure of faith, and saying it out loud makes nobody a burden. God puts real rescue into human hands on purpose, and reaching for one of those hands is obedience, not defeat.

Now, whatever you have been telling yourself about why it did not open, set it down. Proverbs 16:9 says a man's heart plans his way and the Lord directs his steps, and the directing was never contingent on your interview technique, and the Spirit did not need you sharper on the day. You were kept, and being kept is something done to a person, never something a person pulls off.

Joseph stood in front of the men who put him in a pit and said they meant it for evil and God meant it for good, Genesis 50:20, and he said it without ever pretending the pit had been a kindness. That is the shape of this. You are allowed to hold both halves at once, the grief of that Thursday and the hand on the handle, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to trade one of them in for the other.

The breakthrough

So the turn costs you one sentence, and here it is. The Thursday in the parking lot goes back into God's hands as a thing He was doing, rather than a thing He missed. Romans 8:28 says all things work together for good to those who love God, and the Spirit is the one doing the working, and you have not been outside that sentence for a single day of the last four years.

What changes is not the past, which stands exactly as it happened. Psalm 121:8 says the Lord keeps your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and the Spirit of God has been keeping even the going out you never got to make. You were guarded on the days you were sure you had been forgotten, and that is yours to know from tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these with your hand on the wood. This is not you rewriting your own history: what you are about to say belongs to you in Christ, and Christ is in you, so it is an ambassador repeating what the King has already ruled. Revelation 3:7 is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what carries it, and which doors open next, and when, and onto what, is His to decide and never yours to force.

  1. Door on the third floor, you are not a rejection and you were never a verdict on me. Revelation 3:7 puts the key in the hand of the One who shuts and opens, and His hand was on you that whole afternoon. What happened there was a rescue, and I read it as one from tonight.
  2. Voice that says I was passed over, get out of my chest. In the name of Jesus I was kept that Thursday, and the arm that held the door shut is the same arm that has been around me since. I stand in the keeping of the One who holds the key.
  3. Lord, You were in that parking lot with the fogged windows and You were not absent from a minute of it. Your word says You open and no man shuts, and Your Spirit was on that handle while I sat there, so I am taking the Thursday out of the file marked silence. I am putting my hand on this door tonight and thanking You for the one You closed.
